I'm going to be 16 in a few months and i'm going to get a job pretty soon. I weigh about 190 and i'm 160cm tall. I have never rode a dirtbike and i thought the honda crf 150 would be good for me, but i'm probably going to grow taller in the next year or so. So, my question is will i out grow a 150? Because if i grow to 6 ft tall in a year or two will i be a giant on a 150? What size and kind of bike would be the best for me?

Hey man, you gotta ask yourself some questions first. what type of riding will you be doing mostly? are you into the powerband of a 2 stroke or the torque of 4 stroke. Bikes from a 125 2stroke all the way up to an 650 4stroke are close in comparable size, the weight is alot differnt though. so those are simples questions to answer. go from there.

I'd probably want a 4 stroke and i want a good reliable bike that will still work for me in a few years. I want a good bike that doesn't cost too much. I want it to be ok for jumping and trail riding.

if its your frist bike a crf 250 or simallar will be to much power IMO and mantince is normally high a 230 such as a crf is a good starter bike great for trails and easy mantince or a older xr200/250 or the ttr250 are good bikes as well.

i have experience with atvs and snowmobiles is a 230 or 250 too big for me to start with?

My grandpa had a good answer to that when I asked him what size of dirtbike I should ask for. " you're not going to lift the damn thing up over your head are ya?. Well then, when you tip it over just get it back up on its wheels".

Also, as far as the power/displacement doesn't mean much. Just cause the bike has say 25hp and 18ft/lbs of torque at 6000rpm doesn't mean you'll be dropping the clutch and ripping wide open all the time. With time an experience you can get used to the most powerful bike.

Unless you are going to be riding a lot of motocross DO NOT buy a motocross bike. I know so many guys that bought track bikes even though they never ride on the track just because they didn't like the look of the off road bikes (lights, kickstands and what not) and they were absolutely miserable out on the trail. No electric start, small gas tanks, stalling constantly because they have no flywheel weight, and stiff race suspension that beats the rider to a pulp on small trail obstacles does not make for a good time. I would recommend a ktm xc of some sort. The 250xcf as previously mentioned would be a good choice if you are dead set on a four stroke but I wouldn't rule out the small bore two strokes either. I know the 200xc is a solid bike and the new 150xc looks like it could be a fun bike too. These new two strokes aren't nearly as fragile as some people would have you believe, and when it does come time for a rebuild, they are way cheaper and easier to fix. The weight is a huge factor, the 150 and 200 are incredibly light and while the new thumpers don't feel too heavy while riding you still feel the added weight when you hit the inevitable obstacle that requires you to push the bike over it.

definitely IF you have the choice... go with a trail bike off the bat
but all components can be changed to suit your needs if you get a really sick deal for an MX bike

Speaking directly from personal experience, I would buy a trail bike especially if you are starting out for the first time. I used to live in saskatchewan and the only place to ride around where I lived was a motocross track. I bought a CR125 MX bike and ended up not enjoying it. I spent more time riding the practice and kids track because of the fact that the track there was all huge supercross jumps and I just didn't have the riding skills at the time. I would check out the Honda CRF 150 and 230, and I'm not sure if yamaha still makes it but there was the TTR trail bike line-up as well. My step son just picked up the YZF450 MX bike, and knocked himself out on the first ride. He too had tons of snowmobile and quad expereince, but an MX bike is a whole diff. ball game. My 2 cents.

I would try to find a wr 250 yamaha. Built for the trial, longer wheel base, elec start, speedo, and headlight. Still has plenty of power. Plus I am sure the engine is basicly the same as the yz so in a couple years you could give her the 290 big bore kit. My little bro has a yz 250 with the BB kit and it goes pretty good for what it is.

I have road both the crf250 and 230 the 250 is a much better bike. The 230 is smaller and has a lot less power.
