so the guy asks for opinions. mine is automatically wrong? modman?

what im typing isnt made up. just because some people dont like whats coming out of my keyboard does not make it incorrect.

the original poster is looking for information. good or bad i assume?

again these are opinions. just because mine doesnt agree with yours does not automatically make it invalid.

thats what the internet is for. so you can get honest opinions and information. and its not always going to be good. thats just the way it is!

also i noticed that was a rasmussen video. again. when he gets his sleds they go direct to boondockers for a few wweeks until they are PERFECT. the rest of us dont get that treatment. i rode with him this week. i asked him why he wasnt bringing out his turbo. the answer was at 6000-8000ft a stocker is all you need.

in the group i ride with only one rider is always fawking with his sled. and do you know what? its the guy that had to be different then all of us and go with a u s turbo builder. if he would of ran what we told him to do. he wouldnt have the problems. problem is. theres a lot of so called turbo guys out there and i only believe maybe 2 or 3 of them. havent done anything more then changed my oil and a belt every year for the last 3 years!
So your talking 4 stroke not 2 stroke.

To sum it all up if you want to make your riding simple and fun, is stay stock with a few proven upgrades. 2 stroke turbos some run good and some not so be ready for black hands from tinkering while your buds are riding. If you do not fully understand how a turbo works and all its components when there is a glitch what do you do then maybe its not for you.. 4 stroke turbos are more trouble free but in MOST cases your riding a tank.

To the original poster:

Maxwell makes some very good points.

Couple things to consider, If you have a shop do your install, you won't learn a thing about it, what wires run where, how it works etc. unless they happen to let you help them. Valuable knowledge for when you're sitting on the mountain and it's not running right.
If you install it yourself, it probably won't be as good because good installers/builders probably have their own little tricks that make a difference.
If you install it yourself, and pay them to go over everything to ensure it's all right...... doesn't guarantee that it'll run right. or at all.

And one of the biggest most important thing to consider is do you need one? Do you like to compete with your friends for highmarks? If you do you can throw all that fun away because all of a sudden you know you're going to get the highmark when you have 100 extra HP than them, so all of a sudden why even try. You're just might go so high you get yourself in trouble. I know this was one of the biggest downfalls of a turbo, unless all your friends have one, you loose the competetiveness of hillclimbing. I go to play with my friends on the hill, not some dude I've never met before.

An old saying with turbos is that if you can't afford to light a $100 bill and burn it in front of you, you can't afford a turbo. It's been proven true for me with my cutler junk.

To everyone else:

The magic saying "once you go turbo you never go back" is crap.

And when you're talking about how well these four stroke turbos are to boondock in tight trees, keep in mind the skill level of the person you just might be talking to. Not everyone has skills like Chris Brown, Chris Burant,Micku Bros., or Rassmussen. Yes the elite people can make those sleds go anywhere, but that's just what they are. ELITE. They are not your average weekend warrior looking for advice for a weekend warriors skill level (no offense to original poster, maybe you do have their skill... I don't know)

do you know what the main problem with turbo's are? most dont need any thing more then a basic pump gas kit. its when they go over there heads to impress there buddies that they get into trouble. keep it simple and a good kit and you'll have more fun and less problems.

KatMan, that was very informative - you should be the moderator of this forum. Thank you for contributing your words of wisdom.

I'm willing to bet that anyone who rides a bigger sled or turbo can attest that the extra power and trackspeed afforded by thier machine allows them to get out of a tight situation, but it comes at a cost (fuel & increased maintenance). There are a bunch of great setups out there - if you want a turbocharged sled, do your research and buy one. The original poster asked about the pros and cons - not everyone can afford the additional maintenance and fuel cost associated with a turbo, and not everyone buys a new sled every year or two.

i recall yesterday after leaving a certain custom snowmobile shop. a guy was almost in tears. i wish i would have left it stock he kept saying (sniffles)! he needed a hug...but ive been preaching that all along sooo i didnt.

when you get out as much as i do i get to see alot of the ups and downs of these turbos. on average 1% actually run better than a factory sled. if they run at all. i can count on one hand the amount of turbo sleds i have seen whip up a hill and not miss a beat. the rest pop fart and tumble back down because the rider wasnt expecting it to cut out like that!. down to the bottom to mess with the fuel box for a bit.

it is extremely embarrasing to watch a 30000 turbo sled try to touch a stock sleds mark and he just cant quite do it. maybe if he fawks with the fuel map a littlemore he will get it there!

i lean towards riding stock sleds and pushing them to there absolute maximum. i still havent done it. this is just one way of looking at it. the turbos that i have seen run looked and felt downright fun and scary. however they all shared a common issue. turbo lag. there is no escaping it and dont even attempt to tell me yours has none! because it does. those critical milliseconds of throttle response are what keep technical riders pushing forward.

and you cant use the excuse about chris burandt. he rides at 12000ft. ever ride a stock sled at that elevation? barf. you learn to ride a laggy turbo.

so in short. most turbos suck. a few run amazing. will you get yours to run like that? hope so otherwise it will be countless wasted trips and your good riding buddies will slowly start slipping away because no one wants to deal with that.

just keep in mind your taking an already VERY complex machine, adding another 200 parts to a seperate mechanical system, and then taking it into the backcountry.

most areas that you ride you can find factory parts for factory sleds. well goodluck when you need a boondocker box because it cooked, or an 02 sensor, fuel pump, and the list goes on. this is the biggest issue i see. to many guys going down for the weekend becaue of a simple part that just isnt common in the small sledding towns.

just my opinion and findings. and dont take this wrong. ive piloted a few turbos that were a blast.

my advice for anyone looking at modding there sled. add 3" track. pull rope and go. the fun factor is high and it never ends.[/QUOTe

so true!!!!

I also wondered about the turbo for my 2012 Pro, but most of the guys I have saw in the hills with turbo sleds are always playing with it as they make their way up the mountain. Are they all like that or just poorly set up ones, if I could get a turbo that I could just start and ride from the base to the top it would be worth it for me. I am all about no trouble and good reliability, but the crazy power of a turbo would be sweet!

From what I've seen at the store, the 2012 pros handle boost very well. Minor tuning and they rip! A pump gas pro is all most seem to want as they are crazy fun with the pump set up. We are doing Boondocker Installs.

The guys at Boost-it have been very successful with making turbos work awesome on Yamaha's, Polaris's and the e-techs. Not sure if they have done a cat yet but I know if they did it work well. mine has ran flawless since the introduction of the boost it system.
