This is a safety measure in the event of catastrophic turbine failure. This actually appears in the tech rule book in some kinds of diesel pull and dyno so some poor fan doesn’t get their face purée’d by a 90,000 RPM sharp thing at 1400 degrees. 😳

Required by NHRA to have a SFI turbine housing in the event the turbine blows off. Keep in mind this is only for a 7.50 car or faster. The rest of us slow guys don’t require that at all.

As well you’ll see the compressor housing wrapped in a Kevlar blow proof blanket, same deal in the event the compressor wheel blows off. 7.50 or faster deal again.

There is no rule on sizing, but normally this is for a GT55/BW S500 frame or larger turbo. These are typically the only sizes that can get a car to move that fast
