Had a 6.5 box on my ram 3500,a marlon deck with the extension and it worked great, i ran airbags on the truck tho and it made a big dif. Any 3/4 or 1 tonne will work good i personally like 6.5 box unless your gunna use the 8 foot box alot i would stick with 6.5, extension folds up or can be removed very easily and dont have the big overhang if your driving in the city also have the deck extension wired with lights so no flags needed and sled barely hangs over the deck, also have a 29 foot mission trailer. i find myself using the deck more and more. Just purchased a 17 f350 put airbags on it aswell and stuck with the short box will be mounting the deck on it here soon aswell
My advice and opinion is quite blunt. Buy a real truck (1 ton Ford, GMC, Chev, or Dodge) and make sure you can haul two sleds and gear for 2 people without the rear end sagging without air bags (think about how heavy your sleds are after a day of riding and full of snow). The short boxes in my opinion are a joke. People with sleds hanging 4' out the back is ridiculous whether on an extension or not. My deck is 8'6" and if I were to do it over again, I would make it 10' long. Sleds aren't getting any shorter and these 163's are just making it within the limit of being 4' behind the tail lights. You can definitely see where I stand on decks and the BS that one sees in the staging areas.
Yep 1 ton with an 8’ box and good winter tires and a milk crate with chains for when you got to drive up to snow in the early season or spring. Long wheel base drive so nice on the highway loaded up.
Don’t waste your time with a 3/4 ton. Get a one ton and don’t look back. As far as box length... if I had a fifth wheel camper etc and the truck wasn’t my daily drive then I’d get an 8’. Being that it’s my daily driver the short box is the only way to go. Let’s be honest the short boxes are 6’6” (gm, dodge) or 6’9” (ford). Not really that big a difference for hauling but it does make a difference when driving around town.
Agree you need an 8' deck or 7' plus an extension. With long sleds, shortly decks just dont make sense. As far as box length goes, I wouldn't be buying an 8' box simply for the few days a year for sledding. If your deck is anchored in properly on a 1 ton, with a 6.5' box, yes the weight of further back over the tires, but you are not even close to overweight. As far as overhang goes, add a red ribbon for the daytime and a light at night. Use a bike light from Canadian Tire. Cheap and easy and legal.
I run a crew cab longbox 3500, love it. Wouldn't buy anything else, use it daily for work, play and a to b transport. Yes I do have to park a bit further away, but no big deal.
With a deck I would highly recommend a 1 ton as most of the posts all state this. With a 3/4 Ton you are still pushing your weights with 2 sleds, fuel and gear. Unfortunately I only have a 6'6" box on my Chevy, but I ordered my deck with the extension, so should be good.
I like 6.5' box myself, used to run an 02 2500 dmax and it worked, definitely a little soft on the rear end with 2 sleds on the deck and 2 on the 2 place sled trailer behind but it did work. Current rig is a 14 f350 ccsb with 6" lift, have 2 extra leafs in the rear and 2 sleds on the deck is just enough weight to make the truck ride smooth.
If looking at the 3/4ton route look at the gas motors, as they increase payload on most trucks because the drivetrain is lighter.
