Well me gets to go to the Olympics on thursday:p. I won an essay contest through Atco and got a free trip to go see the USA vs Norway hockey game on thursday, visit the Alberta Place in Vancouver and see the awards ceremony that evening where medals will be presented for mens and womans 500m and 1000m speed skating as well as men's half pipe snowboarding. Would be sweet if Canada wins another gold so i could see it presented!! I'm pretty stoked about the whole event!:d

Good job, I work for ATCO so I know what that program is all about. So what did you write explaining how you demonstrate leadership and commitment in your community? lol wasnt' that the topic? Wish they would send ATCO employees to the Olympics. I think your suppose to get a team canada jerseys, mitts, scarfs too...?

About Me
My Name is Ryley ****** and I live on a farm, near the Hamlet of Woking, 50km north of Grand Prairie, Alberta. I attend school in Sexsmith, Alberta which is 35km from my home. I have been actively part of the local 4-h club for 9 years, as well as community curling club. In the past I have also participated in school sports such as volleyball and badminton.
I started 4-h when I was nine years of age, entering in the woodworking project. I quickly realized how much of a community club this was. I am now 17 and still part of this wonderful organization. Every year our club is required to take part in a community service, which we do not accept donation for. We go to the local seniors lodge one evening during the winter and hold a bingo where the residents can win prizes. They sure enjoy seeing the young people come out and have fun, sharing much of their enthusiasm.
Highway cleanup is another event that the members in our club take part in. We clean the ditches along highway #2 for 20km, on both sides every spring. Because of the location, this highway has been labelled a green zone. Since I drive this highway to school every day, I take great pride in seeing the ditches clean. Its sure is nice to see our club members come out and take part in what I consider one of the most rewarding community services. Also I have volunteered, as part of the club, to help the local ladies club cleanup after community functions such as the fall supper and New Year’s celebrations.
Just recently, the small engines project in 4-h has built a pull truck to participate in the truck pulls in our area. Many small communities host this event as a part of their yearly community event. Never before has a 4h club ever entered in such a public event. Being a senior member in the club, it gave me great pleasure to inform the community of what we created. The truck took first place in 3 competitions in the area this year. I believe this shows demonstrates a much innovated way for the 4-h club to get more involved with the larger community.
4-h public speaking is a competition open to the public to view. I believe it is a wonderful time for friends and family to come out and learn new things! I have done presentations on things like how to change a flat tire on your vehicle, past and current social events and even on how to mow your lawn! I think this a great way to strengthen the community, since public speaking can be a difficult thing to conquer!
This year the Hamlet of Woking, which is home to 175 people, entered in the communities in bloom competition. When it was being judged, I, the secretary of 4-h, was chosen to represent the club to the judges. I presented a speech on how my 4h club was a part of the community. I made reference to how we work as a community, an example being of how the ladies club has made a donation towards 4h in return for our help with the fall supper and New Year’s celebration at the hall. It also evoked interest in some other younger folk, who are now interested in the club! I believe that it is the responsibility of the younger generation to help out, and slowly take over organizing and putting on these community functions.
However, I feel my greatest contribution to the community is working on our farm. By growing and harvesting cereal crops, it can be seen as supporting the community. Sure it’s how we make a living, but at the same time I believe it is one of the least selfish occupations. I think this because we produce food, and sell it on an open market. Unlike oil that is unfairly monopolized by a few giant corporations, grain is still sold relatively cheap because of all the competition. This makes the price of a loaf of bread quite low in the local store, which I believe is my greatest way of giving back to the community.

:)
