just bought an old truck box trailer to put my camper in it, did this becasue my jacks are all messed up, the trailer doesnt have a ball reciever, it just uses a pin, was only used on a farm. is it illegal to run a pin hitch setup? to mount a real reciever hitch is going to take some fabrication so i was wondering if it was illegal which im sure it is. haha thanks

Pintle Hitches are not illegal. I thought that converted pickup box trailers were. I don't think you can even register and insure that type of trailer either. Many forget to pull the gear set from the diff and bad things happen. But just being around the farm, anything goes :d  Pin hitches like what's used on a three point hitch and draw bar are farm implement only.

I dont think he's talking about a pintle hitch. just a regular pin style.

a person might want to check into it. i thought hitches have to be approved or something, not sure. I guess it depends how far your taking it. a regular pin style hitch might have a lot of free play and always be jerking and such.

Take a picture and show us what it looks like. I really don't think it would be to hard to weld or bolt a ball hitch coupler on there or pintle hitch or whatever you want

I was told and don't take this as gospel but you are allowed to not allowed to register a new truck box trailer but the old ones that are still previously registered are ok.

You can register anything home fabricated as long as it's inspected (by an authorized inspector, Registries will give you a list of proper inspectors) prior to your attempt to register.

If there is no inspection they will not issue a Registration number that MUST be stamped into the hitch in the proper location identified by the Registering Office.

And no your PIN hitch is not appropriate nor will it pass inspection.

It needs to be a ball type or a pintle type.

Is there a certain size before it needs to be inspected? Last month I registered a 6x12 tandem axel trailer and all they asked for was a serial number. Didn't need an inspection or anything. And it was home built.

No certain size of trailer. All depends on what nazi person you get behind the counter. Some don't even bother but others will run you through the mill on it. Been there, done that. Even argued with one just for a replacement plate so I could keep it legal. The registration number needs to be the long one, if it's under 7 digits your gonna get your nuts busted, automatic give away.

Be wary towing it with at load. The axle on a truck box-trailer is too far forward in relation to the box length causing a very light hitch weight.
