I need to replace the starter on my 2006 polaris sportsman 500ho. It looks like it's going to be a big headache. Can any of you polaris guys give me any advice on how to get it removed. I replaced a starter on my old honda and it was a 10 minute job. This polaris job looks like an all day event. Any advice will be appreciated.

hey guys,
i noticed that my thread had 24 views but no ideas on how to replace my starter. if any of you guys have any advice at all on how to remove it please let me know. you can barely see it in the center of the engine compartment. i would like to meet the engineer that designed this thing. i am sure he did not plan on having to work on it himself.

thanks,dennis

Yep, it's gonna be a PITA but shouldn't take more than a hour

Remove the recoil case and flywheel to get the starter clutch/bendiks out. This will give you some wiggle room and will make the starter installation easier.

Some say you have to remove the inner belt case (and thus the clutches), but I never had to do that.

Are you sure the starter needs replacement? The 500 starters are just about bullet proof. Starter solenoids and clutches/bendiks are much more problematic. This is a vey different setup than your old Honda.

BTW, I've replaced more Honda sprague (starter) clutches than Polaris starters. Honda tranaverse engines require engine removal to replace the sprague clutch vs 20 minutes for a Polaris starter clutch.
