hey guys,

After damaging the motor from my 01 skidoo summit 800, i had taken to the local mechanic to figure out the damage. i knew the top end was done for, though i wanted to find out if the bottom end could be rebuilt and a new top end put on. After getting my sled back a couple of months ago, with the top end in one box and the bottom end in another, and the news of "your going to need a new motor buddy, bottom end is damaged beyond repair" i accepted the fact and started saving for a new motor.

i got a little bored the other night, so i pulled out the bottom end and thought i would have a look at the damage. Behold they had not even opened the crank case. I felt the crank arms move free of any debris and rotate fully with little to no effort.

so it got me thinking, mabey the mechanic didn't do anything to examine the motor and just charged me $300.00 for labor.

So i need some help, i an trying to split the crank case to have a look at how bad the damage is to the bearings and the crank, before i take it back to the mechanic and ask for my money back. Anyone got any tips for splitting the crank case? I can not seem to separate the drive pully end of the case. i have removed all the bolts and the stator.

thanks

P

what was the original failure on that motor, if it was just a seized hole or something just related to the piston/cylinder you might not even have to tear down bottom end. Not sure about 01 800 but is there a plate on the pto side over the seal. Should be pretty straight forward to split, post a pic of the lower case and mabey someone will notice something you have missed.

original failure was caused by the motor being staved of coolant. the cap on the coolant jug was not sealing wait or liquid tight so as it heated up the motor got starved.... ended up melting one of the pistons down, but prob 90% of the schrapnel from the piston was sitting on top of it not dropping down to the crank.....

1st pic is the piston before taking off the top end.

the rest are of the removed motor that i can't separate the case for.

you have to remove the pulley on the mag side as well. there will be a small cover and seal in behind that. that you have to remove it kind of cups a lip on the 2 halves of the case. good luck.

He said he did remove the stator (I'm assuming he did remove the stator and the magneto, not just the magneto) and that its the trouble on the PTO side he's having, not the MAG side. There are little locator pins that guide the case halves together, you need to spread the cases evenly from both ends or the pins bind and won't let the cases come apart. The 01 does not have the square seal holder like the Rev's, its just a seal behind the clutch. Unless you have missed a bolt there is nothing holding it together on the PTO side.

sorry guys, magneto and stator still in place. is there a way to remove them with out having to buy the magneto puller ring as specified in the service manual? also is there a trick to removing the 3 screws that would hold the magneto puller ring on? thanks

go buy a 3 prong puller. be carefull not to thread the bolts in to far as they will hit the stator and ruin it.

as for the ring....it stays...but the bolts need to come out. those bolts are loctited and will need a good jar. maybe some heat. or a method to hold the ring in place...wedge something between the case and the ring(eek). otherwise buy the holder from brp to hold it in place.....orr put the clutch on and use the clutch holding tool...many ways...

Good choice on Mongoose. They sure helped me out in my "learning to tune" stage of riding. Give them your stuff let them do your your crank, jugs and head. Then use their guidance to rebuild the engine yourself. You will be like a proud papa that way!!!!
