The reduction in avalanche deaths is surely largely due to the limited snowfall the west received this season. What is unclear is how big an impact new avalanche safety gear played in the sharp decline. It is impossible to say how many lives were saved this winter due to the wider use of avalanche airbags
ir
but our gut feeling is that the 2014 – 2015 avalanche fatalities number would be greater if not for this relatively new piece of technology.

Well Ray, I don't know how much avi bags helped but if it saved one person, then the number would have been higher. I totally agree with the opening statement and your assumption. I rode half the normal amount (2000 km compared to 4000 km).

I would imagine the price of oil and this so called recession could sway these numbers to. I put on about 800km. Same as most other seasons.

Down big time....3700 miles last year, 1100 this year

Poor snow here in Sask all year plus expanded the family in October. Even if it were a good snow year I would have probably been down to 1500-2000 miles this year.
