Buying a slip tank for sledding this season. 480litre with electric pump. It was used for diesel. My concern is using this for premium fuel for fussy sleds. Is there a special way to clean it? My plan was to fill it with regular and use it to fill the truck a few times before dumping premium for the sleds into it. I don't think a tiny bit of diesel will hurt an old truck. Also is there a meter you can buy for litres pumped? Will make it easier charging my buddies since I will fill it at a set rate a the card lock would be nice to keep track of the use age more accurately. Thanks!

You could get it steam cleaned , by an industrial steamer company ( penny steamers ) is out of lacombe
And I do believe you can get a meter that would attach to the slip tank , I think I seen them in the princess auto flyer yesterday

Yep get it steamed out or do it yourself and you can replace the pump with one that has a meter on it. I haven't seen a meter you can add to a pump but as mentioned they are probably out there.

Empty as much as possible flush with regular as you suggested you got lots of time empty when your ready and voila, ready for premium. Meters and filters are available from princess auto. Meters about $80-100. Absolutely positively install a water absorbing/blocking fuel filter. Can save you a boat load full of trouble.

you don't have to steam it, just do as you planned with a tank of regular and then put your premium in it.

I have a 650 litre one that was used with dyed diesel. All we did was drain it and fill with 94, ran fine in the stocker etec and the turbo one. Slip tank is a great hassle free way if filling sleds. I know ours lasted from late December to about April filling two sleds steady. We used a stabilizer to keep octane up. Your way of cleaning it will be more than enough, any left over residue will be nothing when diluted with 450litres.

I would be wanting to start with a fresh clean tank, hence the steam cleaning. There is a very good chance of water and dirt being in the bottom of it.

Ok so sirkdev mentioned a water separator. Looks like it has just a fuel filter. Which I will change since diesel ran through it. Do you buy a water separator and plumb it in after the filter or is there an all in one combo you can get?

Thanks

Nvm he said water absorbing filter. Got it

Hmmmmm........back reading is always good, eh!

Sounds like a great idea young fellow. I'm always afraid of having too much fuel around and getting it stolen. There are electric pumps that only operate when the truck is running otherwise they don't allow the fuel out.....just something more for thought.

Another thing to consider, is: Will your insurance cover having a slip tank? I know several companies and individuals that have taken them back out of their trucks because it was not covered by insurance, especially if in an accident etc....... Maxwell, check that out first, buddy. You will need dangerous goods sticker on the tank and a registration # as well, if im not mistaken

I believe you can have them as long as they are double walled and have a ground strap to the frame and a second one to be used for the machine your fueling. There is also a limit to how much you can carry before you need placards. Can't remember how much that is off the top of my head though. 4xx something liters I think.....

In SK you can have a tank below a certain capacity without any special signs or safety gear.

Under a 100L, must be double walled, must be strapped down and your out of the TDG, most insurance companies will cover you UNDER a 100L but as Ric said check first.
