We were having our monthly saftey meeting today at five and on the agenda was a fire extinguisher training course from the fire training school(fire ect). The boys were at the shop after school so i had them come to the course, it was great and they sucked it up like sponges. This got me thinking ,why dont we teach some of these things to the kids at school? How about first aid. How many lives could be saved if every child in alberta was trained to use a simple fire extinguisher or graduated with basic first aid. ..... Just thinking:confused:

Some schools have first aid for grade 11.

If you think of it how many businesses have ext. classes?

Exactly. Just like why they don't teach people how to plan and save money, do their taxes, all that jazz. Instead you learn a lot of crap you'll never use. I mean, you have a "Career and life management" course in hs, but what a joke.....

I head up the education committee with the Edmonton Regional Safety Committee.... Our #1 focus is getting safety education into the school system. It is a hard nut to crack and we have been working at it for years. We have gone into some schools and done presentations and I'm currently working on a new presentation aimed at high school students who will be entering the workforce whether it be for a summer job or just working around the farm...

There are important things all kids should know before entering the workforce, the reason so many young workers are injured is because they are keen to make a good impression and will do what they are asked without questioning consequences.... they should all be taught about their right to refuse unsafe work and to question a situation when they are uncomfortable. Employers are now being held more and more criminally responsible but unfortunately by that time the damage is done.

Parents...... show your kids these websites before they start a job....
As parents we protect and educate our children....their employer should do the same..........

I think that at some point our opinions would clash as to your views towards employers. We shoulder the burden of everyones actions, although i agree 100 percent with the right to refuse at what point do we completely remove the individuals responsibility for his own actions.I have a full time saftey officer, hold current COR and I.S net standing. we spend huge dollars every year on saftey. but still cant teach any commonsense.
My whole point behind this thread was to possibly equip children with some simple skills to help themselves or others. not to arm them for workplace activism

I think you missunderstand my point..... I do not condone abuses of the protective systems that are in place. I work as an EH&S manager for a mid-size construction firm, we assume the role of prime contractor on all of our projects. when we hire young workers we take the time to properly train and educate them as I'm sure you do as well. I'm talking about the kid who goes to work for "BOB's roofing" and is told to "get up there" without fall protection training or equipment.....many kids will do as told without question because they feel "It's thier job"....... and they don't know any better.

I don't put up with players..... as a company we play by the rules and expect the same from our employees. My job is to protect the best interests of the company and if someone wants to play games I've disputed WCB decisions and won.

I just think it's important for the schools to play a greater role in "life preparation"...... I don't just present the responsibilities of the employer to them, I speak to them about their responsibilities as a worker and how their choices affect other workers AND their employer.....

My work with the ERSC and the education committe is voluntary..... Proffessionally I represent an employer...

at our school if we could get taught first aid and whmis courses, and the principle basically laughs at us and said, that it not in the budget, but the can pay kids 10$ an hour to be a hall monitor and the kid would just use that as an excuse to pick on other kids because he had "authority", what a joke i think the school system needs to be re done. but our pe teacher did do a cpr course with us glad i learned somthing
