Don't use r.v antifreeze in the lines ( pee traps yes)

Don't let water sit in there for periods of time

Shouldn't drink the water anyways

We never drink the rv water tank water

I bypass my hot water tank and do use pink stuff to winterize

I add 2 to 3 oz of bleach to each tank fill. Tank is 120 gallons.

Drain after each trip.

do you do the bleach at the end of the season or at the beginning?
I run bleach through my tank and lines once a year to clean it says right in the owners manual!

Like bjd68 says; bleach.

In the fall everything is drained and the RV antifreeze is put in; traps, lines, pumps, etc.. In the spring, all the water lines, the main water tank , and the hot water tank are sanitized with bleach. I use 4 cups to my tank of water. Let it sit and circulate it through all the lines and faucets. Then flush it out. Takes a few days of use to get rid of the bleach smell and taste but we know it is clean and bacteria free.

When I bought my trailer I used a cup of bleach in the tank as well. I just left it in there as it is a 110gallon tank. Drained everything out yesterday and winterized it. Heater bypass on and use antifreeze to fill the lines and drains. Next spring I will do bleach again in the first tank.

In my head
I stopped using bleach. Bleach contains a lot of other salts that leave the bad taste/smell. Household bleach is very crude/not very pure. Now use stabilized chlorine granules - Sodium Dichloro. It's for swimming pools, refined and concentrated. Very little needed to sanitize tanks. Can buy it in the pool section at C-Tire. Leaves no taste or smell and is a powerful sanitizer.

I use air to blow out water lines. Disconnect toilet valve and open all taps to let air dry for a week or so. Then close up and add antifreeze to the P traps only. Hate having the antifreeze in the fresh lines. Again, taste, smell and toxicity issues.

I am not afraid to drink the water in the fresh tank once I have cleaned it. As long as I keep filling with a municipal water source, there is enough chlorine to keep the tanks bacteria free. However, any contact with a water source of suspect origin, and we don't.

Why would anyone put bleach in the fresh water? Vinegar is a fantastic cleaner and leaves no residue

Bleach and chlorine kill bacteria. Both have their problems and environmental/health concerns to some people but I use it as a disinfectant/sanitizer. I don't think vinegar works in the same manner. I could be wrong as I am not an expert. I leave that to the RN in my life and she swears by bleach!

We have used bleach in each tank fill for years. Works great and is cheap.

We don't drink rv tank water.

Water treatment/distribution is my career and this guy hit the nail on the head I have access to good quality Cl12 so that's what I use. Bleach will work but a good quality cl12 in any form (liquid/powder)is better.

Its easy to do just add some in twice a season and as long as your using good quality municipal water and your not letting your tanks sit full for a extended period of time your GOLDEN.

Define extended period. I fill mine when needed during the summer. Might be once might be 3 or 4 times. Then drain in the fall for winterizing.

I use 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide and works great. Used to use it for our hot tub as well until we bought a ozonator.

I use this every tank and drain every time out , including hot water tank. It only takes a capful for 40 gallons. It says 2 but I've found that's too much.
Seems to work pretty well as we have never had an issue with smell or color.

Like if you went camping and didn't drain your fresh water tank before parking it for 3 weeks before your next trip. The heat and being stagnant will break down the CL12 and give the opportunity for bacteria to grow (there are a lot of factors here but best to play it safe). One should drain there water tanks after every trip for that reason and its less weight on everything when you pull it home. When I leave the campground I crack my drain and close it when I get home. The hot water tank is never drained until the end of the season because you wouldn't drink that anyway.
