Has anyone ever ran an 05 RT 1000 with the very front cooler and the rear cooler removed. Was just wondering if i could remove both of them without overheating issues in normal snow conditions.
I ran mine with the main cooler cut in half(removed back half) & removed rear cooler as well............ no overheating other than bare trails with no scratchers. I always ran bolts on the inside edge of the skiis for scratchers & sprayed more snow on the entire skid rather than just the back half with those scratchers on the rails.
I already have my rear cooler out and it still runs cold. I was just thinking about pulling the front cooler so i will have more room for that 3" camo extreme track thats coming out. Just a little worried about overheating on the trail up. So i think im going to install a thermostat so it holds its engine temp in the deep powder, and if it overheats on the trail ill reinstall the rear cooler. Wish it would snow out here so i could test it before i drive all the way to the mountains to find my issues.
I run with the rear cooler removed and the front cooler bypassed. had to bypass the front cooler after it developed a leak the season before last. It's a tough one to remove because it's part of the structural design on the RT. I have heard of some custom shops doing it. I did heat mine up a few times on the late spring conditions with nothing for the scratchers to break up, but no damage!
At specialty we used to take the rear cooler out and cut the main cooler under gas tank in half.. And didn't have any issues at all.. if you look at an'06 rt 1000 you'll see that they have way less cooling than the '05 does.. When the sled runs cool because of over cooling it'll actually cause it to run rich as it'll add extra fuel to try and compensate as it can end up going into more or less warm-up mode at times.. Also you should stop by martin equipment and talk to jerry in service and ask him if he can install the new e-rave progamming for you, it will get rid of any surging on the trails and makes the raves work alot better..
best thing to do to get the RT1000 running at a good temp is 2 things...
1. remove the rear cooler...
here is a pic of what I did
then finished product
when you do this...in the small aluminum tube there is a block there...you have to drill it out...so if you do just make sure you dont get metal shavings in the cooler....I put a piece of cardboard in there and then drilled above the cardboard...this caught most of it then I put a vaccum on the end and sucked the rest out...make sure it is a wet/dry vac ....been running like this for a year now and no issues...
2. the second thing is to add a Thermstat to these things....this is easy...
all you need is a thermostat housing from a 2008 800 xp...part number is #509000499 they run around $30-$35 from the dealer...then you can get a T as well or a Y (make sure it can with stand the coolant temps, common pvc will not it will break down after a while) and you need some hose....
here are the pics of my install
I have heard of people removing the front cooler but only cause it was leaking...otherwise most have left it in...
mine is in as well...
on the thermostat I have not tested it yet...besides letting the sled run in my garage but lots have and said it works awesome...
I also suggest getting a temp gauge if you dont have one and a fuel pressure gauge as well...
