EDMONTON — The Alberta government is restocking Wabamun Lake with walleye over the next six years.
The program begins this summer with the transfer of 500 mature walleye from Lac Ste Anne and Lake Isle to Wabamun Lake.
In the second year, walleye eggs from Lac Ste Anne will be sent to the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery, and a portion of those fry will also be returned to Lac Ste Anne to increase its walleye population, according to Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
The number of walleye transferred will not affect the fisheries in the other two lakes, as less than 0.5 per cent of the population will be transferred, the ministry says. Currently, walleye caught in Lac Ste Anne and Lake Isle must be released due to the population status of the fish. However, regulations will be adjusted as numbers increase, the ministry says.
TransAlta is assisting with the walleye restocking project as part of its work to reclaim the Wabamun plant site.
Restocking Wabamun is expected to reduce fishing pressure on the other two overfished lakes while providing an additional fishery to Albertans.
