'cause they got too hot, sepecially during online gameplay. my boy is on his 3rd one, second PS3 slim...

They do get warm, but it shouldn't be damaging the system, unless the environment the PS3 is placed in is compacting the issue. I have an original PS3 from the system launch, and I have never had any issues with overheating. I keep it on a shelf away from other equipment that might get hot, and I routinely blow out any dust that accumulates with compressed air.

PS3 Slim technology is better in that the components are smaller, requiring less power, which in turn reduces the heat created. The latest PS3 hardware revision has a die-shrink on the graphics processor, which should also eliminate a large portion of the heat given off by the system under loads.

...Anyway, my two cents. I'd still like to know what you end up using, if anything.

first PS3 had auxillary cooling fan mounted on the back of the unit, it died after it was off warranty and I believe it was the blu-ray diode/laser that was fairly common on the first models. not 100% sure it was a heat issue. the second one was also inside an entertainment stand deal, with an open back and the boy had a small clip on fan blowing onto it from the back. the new one is now on top of the stand away from any other electronics on top of the laptop cooling pad. it's only been six months since we got unit number three, we'll see how long it lasts.
