The Notely government is at it again if it's not destroying our oil industry and all future investment in alberta she's attacking the atv industry.

I personally do agree that helmets should be worn but I disagree with anyone under 16 cannot ride a motorized vehicle even if it's made for them.

I did find a link about a month ago or so to an Alberta Transportation to public opinion on proposed law changes. The Survey asked questions about helmets for those under 16, over 16, also about impounding vehicles for excessive speeding, but absolutely nothing about banning those under 16 from operating an ATV. Although Notley has thrown curve balls and BS legislation before, this survey didn't cover anything about it.

What’s going to make all these people mad? The NDP are making changes to the laws surrounding ATV use in Alberta. They are examining helmet laws for both public and private lands and mandatory age restrictions for ATV use.

Putting age restrictions on ATVs will infuriate farmers and hutterites who use ATVs as farm tools. Age restrictions will also render the smaller machines many ATV dealers carry nearly unsellable. New laws would also mean directing limited rural police resources towards the millions of acres of Alberta crown land when violent crime is on the rise.

14 is the age they say.

Under 14 can't drive atv

You need to read teh document before jumping to conclusions.this is right out of the link above

Minimum driving age: The minimum age for operating off-highway vehicles onpublic land or highways is 14 years where permitted. If you are younger than14 years, you may operate on public land with supervision by someone 18years of age or older who is either on the same off-highway vehicle or in closeproximity.(Off-Highway Vehicle Regulation, Section 2.) If operating on private property,no age restriction applies.

Prohibition
2(1) A person who is less than 14 years old shall not drive anoff-highway vehicle on a highway.
(2) a person who is less than 14 years old shall not drive anoff-highway vehicle on public property unless

  1. (a) the person is supervised by a person who is occupying thepassenger seat on the off-highway vehicle or is in or on avehicle that is travelling in close proximity to theoff-highway vehicle, and
  2. (b) the person supervising is 18 years old or older.
(3) No person shall permit a person who is less than 14 years oldto drive an off-highway vehicle in a public place except inaccordance with subsection (2).

Right out of the Alberta regulations. As long as your supervising the under14 it looks like to me your good to go!!

Only thing i can see them doing is changing the min age to a licencing age. Then it would follow the motor veh act a little closer. Same thing the rest of the provinces have done. Not unless in Alberta you can get a drivers licence at the age of 14? Because your current law does not make since. You can drive a atv on the road at 14 but not a motor veh untill 16?

The title of this post says "Proposed changes to Atv Laws" This is for ALL Off Highway vehicles, and the helmet requirement IMO is Long overdue.
