Hey. I was wondering if these are decent atvs for mudding and snow etc. I can buy an 03' with a plow and winch for $2,000. Is there any pros an/or cons to these. thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

I have an 05 500HO Sportsman since new and basically, all I doo now is plow driveways. The occasional ride in the summer, but it has taken me pretty much everywhere the big boys go. I don't know about the 700 motor; post your query in the Mud Pit Chat and you will be more responses. Good luck.

Excellent ATV, i had the same one but 04 model. The 03 might be carb but mine was fuel injected, it was optional in 2004. The carb version were more problematic in cold weather, didn't like starting and running till warmed up. Otherwise they had lots of power and the motors are very solid. When i sold it the atv had over 8,000miles in a 5yr span, i put one set of spark plugs in it and one drive belt EVER. It always ran like a top.
The Polaris all wheel drive system also worked flawlessly, i had a plow and plowed my long drive with it. I recommend if your going to plow with it get wheel chains for the rear wheels, it makes a huge difference in the ability to plow, much easier on the atv.
On the trail it rode nice and handled well, it was excellent on rocky terrain and in mud but like a lot of atv snow was limited, once you hung up you were stuck.
They are heavy so i recommend a good winch, i had 2, one in the front and one in the rear.

I like the Polaris ATV in general and now i have an RZR 800 which is basically the same motor as the 700 used in the Sportman, again i have had no motor issues or drive system issues.

Complete and utter junk....you mentioned mudding...you can't unless the rad is relocated. It is mounted down in the mud to start with : constant overheating !!
The primary clutch is mounted independently of the secondary , thus constant belt issues and fractured primary clutches.

The gearing is awful, high is to low geared and low range is to high geared.

If you plan on really " riding"the bike you will be disappointed, if you just trail around a bit it will be fine......you can not get much for that kinda money! The new style popos are a great bike, the older sportsmans are sadly quite the opposite......imo.
