im totally new to the entire snowmobiling thing. im buying a used sled and was wondering what is needed for me to carry in my avy pack when i head out in the backcountry with my buddies. Also i need to get a new helmet because all i have is my open face one that i use for quadding in the summer time. I dont want to spend alot of money right of the bat but at the same time i dont want to buy cheap stuff. Thanks for any help on this guys. Great site!

as far a the helemt goes, you can't go wrong with a closed face, heated visor helmet. the cord is kind of a pain in the @ss sometime but you will surely stay warm and NOT fog up. For a bit more money you can get a closed face helmet where the front flips up, it has a breathing aparatus so it doesnt fog up, and some even have lens that you can flip down for different riding conditons. If you want to stay cheap, i'd say use your quading helmet, and buy a good breath deflector/nose guard, as well as a double lens for your goggles. Just this year i swithched to this setup and love it. (my stupid electric visor broke and i was to cheap to buy a new one). i have rode in -20 weather, not fogged up and stayed fairly warm. this would be the cheapest and easiest way for you to get into the sport!!!

o also dont go cheap on helmets. stick with brands like HJC, Fulmer, Klim etc. you get what you pay for and don't risk your safety. happy riding!!:d

All the basics; probe, shovel, beacon. Try and take an avy training course, but at the very least become familar with your beacon. Have one of your friends bury their beacon in the backyard and then use yours to find it. It'll take practice to get it right.
Also try and keep in mind you may need to stay out over night so take gear with you to help you deal with that as well. That can be a simple as you like, tarp, rope, matches, saw or hatchet, water and food. Of course this list can be greatly expanded out as well.
As for a helmet, a motocross or snowcross style helmet will work quite well for you. A good pair of double lens goggles and an product we retail the Haber Eliminator will help keep you fog free. Habervision has a very good sale going right now on Haber goggles and Eliminator combos, check sale out in our vendor forum.
The last item is a good pair of bibs or pants, something that is waterproof but still breathes, there is nothing worse than a cold, wet rear end, which occurs due to the powder flying up and then the warmth of your body melting the snow when it contacts the seat.
Oh yes, have fun and play safe

I agree on the motocross style helmet, the full face helmets suck in a big way. I don't know anyone that has gone from a full face to a motorcross that regrets it. I have both and my full face hasn't come out of my closet in about 10 years..even in cold cold cold weather :) Just a thought ..

My suggestion for avy gear would be to pick up the same as whatever the majority of your friends carry, they'll also know the best place to pick up this gear as well.
Most of the motosports dealers in your area probably have good deals on gear right now; Choko and Klim depending on how deep your pocket goes, should both be easy to locate your area.

awesome so far! Where is th enest place for me to get all this and how much should i spend on it?

Until you r sure you will like riding in the mountains I wouldnt buy all the avy gear but you definatly need it! Mayb u could rent it off a friend who isnt goin with? or if not you can rent by the day right from the hotel or the local snowmobile shop depending on where you go! ...I usually wear a full face helmet until spring but if I do wear my snocross helmet I have a good breath deflector and a good pair if googles to wear with it and it works just fine! If its snowing I just take my goggles off and put them in my coat or inside the hood of my sled to get warmth from the engine! Good Luck and Ride Safe!

Motocross style helmet is fine Get a good set of double lens goggles. As for what to carry in your back pack there are a couple good threads, just search for them on here.
