I'm buying a sled privately from someone in the U.S. What do I need to have in order to get it across the border problem free. I might even have someone else pic it up for me.

Well I know exactly what you need, I just got back monday with truck, sled trailer and race bike. But pm me and leave me you number I can call you at and give you the list. One thing I can say is Do Not Try and under value the sled. WARNING they will find out. I also have brought many sleds. Good luck.

Take a copy of the add for that unit with you.
They check forums for current pricing. If you do get an "exceptional deal" make sure the seller will back you because you will get hasseled .

X2 and keep you there untill they are satisfied, So I will post it for anyone else.
1-Bill of Sale
2-Clear Title
3-A Recall clearence letter/the owner should get that from dealer in usa free/just states that all recalls have been completed
4-Sent to what ever border you are crossing 72hrs before
5-Keep all payments, wire transfers, any form of payment history when you come back( this can save your neck lol)
6-If on ebay keep listing/ or any info of how you found sled.
7-If somebody else is bringing back for you, write a letter stating that you(full name) and his full name and each others addresses will be transporting unit back for you.
8- If unit is less then 15yrs old bring canadian money for 5% gst at border
9- If unit is older then that, then you will state to them that it is older and you will not pay the gst.
10-Make sure the manufacture sticker is not torn off because you will not get through.
11- Make sure you do not lie about anything, they will find out LOL
GOOD LUCK

A friend of mine under-declared the value of a truck and boy was he in trouble and now he is red flagged as well. So not worth the few bucks you would save.

you have to be 100% certain that the manufacture date , sn , and manufacture sticker is still visible on sled. Have the seller confirm this and send you a picture. Without the manufacture date and SN, you aren't getting the sled into Canada

x3 on the not undervalueing the sled. I did that once and now am red flagged. My ability to tell a lie is about 6 out of 10, their ability to tell if I am lieing is about 10 out of 10. You will not get away with it. If the deal is good enough for you to go through all the trouble of importing, then it should be good enough to allow for complete payment of the fees.

Just make sure that you have all of your paperwork with you. And then pray that you don't get the newbie! With an experienced agent and all the proper paperwork you will have no issues. A newbie can cause you a lot of headache's that no one needs!

I was also thinking of pulling a couple sleds out of the states, So how does it work if the sled is a full blown custom, custom tunnel etc.... will this cause issues??

We go back and forth at least once a month with stock and we always use Sweet Grass/ Coutts never ever had issues. The one time we used Portal/North Portal we had a HUGE fuster cluck.

When we brought back my Project Black I had to enter it under a TIB so it was a different process because I entered with the sled one way and brought it back as a full on custom. We will be bringing across another Project Black sled in a few weeks that is new and I will find out about bringing across a full on custom. I am headed to Sweet Grass/Coutts in the next week to pick up my stock and plan on talking to the border crossing guys to see what I need to do to bring that sled across. If you can remind me I'll let you know because I am over 40 and I might not necessarily remember to do this....lol!
