I have the chance to buy a 2005 Summit 800. The kicker is that the sled has been severely overheated. The engine has not been stripped down and the extent of the damage not really known.

I know what to look for on other brands but I've never owned a Doo. Any advice or first hand information would be appreciated.

Thanks:p

I'm pretty sure it's beyond that from what I'm told is that the engine is discolored from heat. I have not seen it yet but what I think is the kid that was running it drove it into the ground or till she stopped running.

It would have to be a hell of a deal before I would go near it..... and I'd have an engine sourced before I got it......

The pistons would have already melted to the cylinder long before the outer casing became discolored.

Your better off finding a new motor if you can because the cases will be warped now and all internal parts would be questionable, specifically all the bearings.

Thats what I cant figure if the engine did in fact stop running from heat would it have not seized. The kid said it still turns over. I going to have a look at it for myself.

Well, if its that bad, your looking at $3000 for a new engine..... sled is not worth much more than that in my opinion..... maybe on kijiji its a $5500 fixer upper but not to me......lol

I couldn't agree more. I'm looking for something the kids and I can do together, but I'm not buying a (wish I shouldn't have) project. Me thinks it might be toast but will have a look anyway.

should be a freebie

05 summits are worth 4000 TOP and only if they are straight, have good clutches, track, skis etc .. something like that needs a new crate motor at the least. then you have to deal with rebuilding the cluches, putting on new skis and maybe a track .. and if it's not bent out of shape

Have a look at what you can get for a good running condition rev before you make an offer.

Honestly, if your looking for a decent sled for yourself and the family, your better off to stay away from mountain sleds. Mountain sleds hit the deep snow and the engines are run full tilt, balls to the wall, break it in like ya stole it, all day long.....its just the nature of the sleds.

Thanks Duck but that's the only place I ride. I own two Pro Poos, which is why I asked for advice. My expertise in Doo doesn't go far. The kids are just like me and want to wrench on something which is why I was looking for a project.

Thanks for the reply's but if the chassis is not in mint shape or decent I would never consider it anyway.

I was wondering what people had to say about the rev chassis and motor. I think they were a decent sled. The chassis was weak if I'm not mistaken? I could be wrong as I really don't follow Doo. The motor I thought was bomb Proof.

The coolant is probly jelled. I did a similar project it was messy. Melted wires and hoses/tanks. Need to flush out the coolers. Also water pump impeller on the front is for sure melted as mine was because it is plastic. Will also be gummed up.

The REV chassis was pretty solid as were the engines.
One mod I would doo if you buy it is to delete the thermostat. A few burned down because the thermostats would get stuck closed and there was no bypass. The 800r in '07 actually came without a thermostat at all. It's a simple and easy mod to doo. Only thing is it takes a little longer to warm up so you gotta let it idle for a bit before riding it to avoid a cold seize.

Thanks, what do you think about the bottom end? Will the crank stand up to heat or is there a failing point to it as well?

The rev is a great sled but the motors need attention around the 3000km mark. My friend had an 04 rev 800 with a 144 and that thing was great
