So I own a 97 Arctic Cat Powder Extreme 600/triple. It has reverse but I have been having issues with the drivetrain. I am a bit disappointed for buying a triple, have heard since they are nothing but trouble. Any merit to what I have heard? Does anybody know of drivetrain issues? Don't want to spend too much money, may cut my losses and get a twin. Any comments?

I had a 98 600 Powder Special and a 98 550 Cougar which I think are similar drive to your triple. I have had no trouble with the clutches or chain case or driver shaft etc all good. I had some issues with the crank on the 600 twin but totally different than the 600 triple. My friend had a powder extreme with a 600 triple and it worked well . Very good torque at low RPM . The only issue with triples is to get the carbs sync and jetted properly ( any brand of triple) . Also don't expect to get ths same RPM's out of triple that you would out of a twin. Triples spin a bit lower in RPM so becareful of your clutch weights for the lower elevations and don't allow you triple to over rev ( it will kill the crank and piston skirts). I would recommend to change your drive chain every 1500-3000 miles ( depending how you drive ) . Another friend with a 580 broke his chain ( had a reverse kit ) and it was difficult to get the sled out of the river valley near Devon. A chain for $60 - $ 80 is cheap insurance considering the grief. Just my 2 cents worth.

In addition to the drive train rant - most pepole hated the Powder extreme because it was so front heavy. It was brutal in deep snow and only a straight line sled. If the sled is pounded hard the frame cracked behind the engine mounts and the center to center of the clutches changed to create a lot of grief . Some shops had a plate that was installed to stiffen up the frame. Good luck
