Must say it was fun but kind of lost interest. Have a street legal dunebuggy now and dont have to haul for a 1 hour drive to get out and had some buggy fun.
Some pics of the off road rail. She will be missed but has a good home.

Re: My mudin days are over.

Thanks guys.

Engine is all aftermarket (the parts you can buy for VW's no a days is awesome!). Aluminum block, a bit heavier than the stock magnesium block but stronger. Block is clearanced for a stroker crank and beefed up in all the weak places where stock blocks fail. For right now its a 1776 cc (up from the stock 1600 cc) but if I stroke it I can get it to a 2110cc. It has a welded and counterbalanced crank, Big valve heads, 110 cam, deep sump oil pan and high volume oil pump which has been taped and plugged for external oil filter, it runs cool enough I dont need an external cooler. 009 mechanical advance distributor with electronic ignition and rev limiter. Dual carbs, not the biggest but it works with the combination I have. It's not "fast" (top speed I've had it to is 140kmph and does take a while to get there) but its damn quick! not much touches it first gear through second gear. It only weighs 1500lbs. I had some issues when I broke the engine in. the lifters took out the cam. Was a compatibility issue. Got that soerted and its been fantastic. Have about 5000 kms on it so far.
I rebuilt an old transmision that I had in the off road rail. Took out the brass shifting forks and put steal ones in. New reverse gear (Beetle transmisions dont like 31" terra tires lol). The transmision is tired but is hanging in there. I'd love to throw a 5 speed in it. There are conversion kits to put a Porsche trans in but will probably end up with a Rancho type 1 Pro Street. We will see. Just like any toy its never really done, always a work in progress :)

Re: My mudin days are over.

Is the exhaust pipe sticking out that far, legal??????

Been pulled over once. I have a baffle in it but no packing so it barks pretty good if on the pipe and I gave him a reason for pulling me over :) He asked me if I built the exhaust, I said no its an aftermarket exhaust for a beetle. He asked me a pile of questions about registering it and insuring it. He noticed I didn't have any back up lights. I said it's registered as a 1960 so I have to have everything a 1960 had and they didn't have back up lights. He said you don't need them anyways. Very cool cop. No warning, no tickets....so far.

Right suspension in picture has taken a hit and is bent back.

Bias tires on front radials on back, Big no no.
Roll bar is what they call a mouse trap. Single bar bolted into fiberglass. Roll it and guess what!

After looking at some old pictures I forgot how much work I put into this car. It was a swing axle rear end. While great for wheel travel they aren't so good for cornering so I converted the car to IRS. I narrowed the front suspension 2" to tuck the wheels in nicer. I welded in front and rear torsion adjusters so I can raise and lower the car in about 5 minutes.

The only thing I used from the original car was the body, windshield frame (i replaced the galss) and the front suspention, which I narowed. The rest was bought new or made by me.
I enjoyed building this car a lot!!
