Moutan sled for two-up

Before I start, I want to complement this site for all the support and advise it offers. In all of my searching, Snow and Mud seems to offer the most.

Here is my dilemma, I'm total newbie to snowmobiling. I am looking for advise on what and how I should do for setting up a ‘Mountain sled’.

Background,
Absolutely no experience in ‘sledding’. (Except of a one-hour rental in Vermont).

I’m 49 year old, just moved to Reno Nevada. (Recently returned to the Mainland, after 16 years in Hawaii.).

Skilled in motorcycle mechanics, accomplished on and off road motorcycle rider.

Some Jet Ski experincing with tow-in surfing

Expert skier, limited backcountry experience.

New wife, with bad knee (tired taking her out skiing on the last day of ski season last year, injured her ACL. Her future in this sport questionable).

Goal
Find a suitable ‘sled’ setup to allow towing skiers to backcountry areas, some trail cursing and exploring. Moutain sledding. Additionally, would like to do it two up at times.

Tentative plan
I want to stick with a Yamaha. The motor is simiular to what I’m use to with motorcycles, additionlly I like fuel injection for dependably and the altitudes of the Seirra's.
So far, what I’m thinking about is getting an Apex, and buying a Two-up sitting arraignment adaptor

Please let me know what you guy think. The two up is pretty important, this is the only way I’ll be able to get out and play. Wife doesn’t want to stay home while I’m out and about.

I am new to the sport also as of last year so I can only tell you about my experience with a 2 up arrangement. I made a back rest and bought a seat for my RMK 600 and it turned out quite well. On packed snow and a little powder it was pretty good although I had to over steer a bit. As soon as we hit some powder ( 2' ) in the fields I was finished. I couldn't control the sled with my wife on the back. That was it for the 2 up.

We do a fair amount of shuttling each winter to get lines on the snowboards. We ride tandem. One guy (or girl) per side, standing on the running boards. It's tough to punch in a trail like that, but once you have your route to the top its not too shabby. Sucks if you are sledding in 20+ K to get where you want to ride though.

I've never done alot of two-up riding but I agree, one sled/one rider, is the only way to go especially once you get into the deeps.:twocents::cool:

the 2 up seat is fine for running the trails into where you want to go, but once you want to start making the climbs to drop a skier off the best way to ride is with your passenger seated in front of you while you stand behind them. I've been riding the BC mountains for 35+ yrs and quite often take a passenger and this is the only way to have complete control of your sled when doubling. The downfall is when you want to shift your weight and have to swing a leg over the seat the back rest on that 2 up will stop you, and believe me you'll be shifting weight alot if your running any deep powder or making any serious climbs. It's not an impossible task though to 2 up in the mountains and have a blast, although I wouldn't recommend it if your just starting out as a sledhead. A couple pics of some mountain 2-up for you.

We run with a Seat Jack same as the one you are looking at for two up riding. Like the other people have mentioned, works great for trail riding and a little tricky in the powder. Your probably better off to get another sled if your looking at doing much powder riding. Something in the 600 class with a wide front end and creature comforts would probably be a good bet. You can always size up once a new rider gets comfortable with sledding. A word of caution, Mtn Phazers tend to be tippy by nature.

Anyways... if you actually want her to enjoy the back country 2 upping isn't the way to do it.. at all.. Neither of you will be as happy as you would with 2 machines. Although you're used to 4 stroke motors, I'm sure you'll catch on to tinkering on 2 strokers. There are plenty of awesome set ups for ski and board transport for machines. We stock Cheetah Factory Racing stuff that seems to just fly out the door.
Many of the boarders in our area like the M series cats ( M7, M8, M6) for doing their sled laps. Seem to be the best of both worlds.. you actually can get a seat that fits on the back if you are wanting to 2 up in ways other than runny tandem or squirrel position doubling.

I am a new sledder as well. This is our second full year. No way I could afford two brand new sleds so I looked around for some good used ones. My 2004 800 had 234 miles on it when I bought it. I have heard other similar stories out there as well so they are out there. Just looking at this from a little different angle for you.
As mensioned two sleds would be best.
I'm into this whole set up with two low mile 2004 RMK machines and a brand new trailer for $15,000.00. Whats a new sled worth? 10-12? Maybe one day we will upgrade but in the time being we are out having a blast and machines are running flawlessly. The machines will by far out perform our skill level so were not missing anything. If you have never been on a machine trust me you do not need to go new. These older machines perform!!!

I often need to double people, to get through spots that they are having trouble with. By far the easiest way is to put the passenger in front of you, and to have a light sled.

The Yamahas are great sleds but there is a lot of weight to start with. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 2 strokes on the market today although i really like the cats, the adjustable steering post helps when you double.


If you spend a bit of time getting to know how to ride without pulling the sled with force you will be able to double just fine.

This is the way to go. Sit on the seat on the trail and then when you want to get up to doo a line, Jay has the proper scenario. To bust the trail up, use one rider (the other stays at the bottom) to pack and continue to pooch the original track until you have a well beaten track that you can ride tandem on.

One person works the gas the other works the brake and each hold on to the mountain bar with the spare hand. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is very functional.

I wouldn't recommend the Yamaha even though the motors are quite dependable as they are very heavy when stuck and trying to learn how to get up to the top is going to be a pretty steep learning curve. But doo get out and enjoy what the back-country has to offer. Enjoy..:D

For 2 up, you can just buy the 2 up seat and forget the backrest......with the new skidoo linq system its very versatile..... I can ride with my X seat or the 2 up with or without the backrest. The seat pops off and on is 3 seconds....add 5 seconds for the backrest.....lol

if your lady is smallish then princess is the go. that is her sitting in front holding the mtn strap. it works well and my X-girl luved it, coz compaired to my ducati where she only saw the back of my helmet, this way she sees all and gets face shotz too. but when in deeper snow the side by side is the only way to go.
but really, get her her own sled and she'll be hooked! resonable sleds can b found for $3000.
think 2 stroke, yams are good sleds but they prefer to be stuck.

Another vote for no two upping in the mountains, trails maybe... lol. It's ok if you have to get around and to get to a fro but for actual riding it's a toughy for both parties. I've only enjoyed tandem doubling but have sat squirrel in front too...but I hated the lack of control. :p I had no ACL when I started sledding, it was completely severed years ago. I could ride easy enough without it and with a light brace but once I started to be more aggressive on the hill it wouldn't hold up and I'd sprain it and end up not walking for the week...until the following weekend came and I'd do it all again.:p haha. Had ACL replacement two years ago and haven't looked back, best thing ever!! Currently ride with a few peeps who have ACL or knee damage of some kind, and it's possible to do for sure, a brace might be needed, but it's easier on your own sled when you can regulate what you're doing easier and how much you're riding on your bad knee.

Buy a used Turbo sled. Lots of deals out there. Get on a Yammy Apex or Nytro turbo and even 2-up you can high-mark everyone else!

I would go with one of the new Tundra Extremes for your use. I am sure that you can get a back rest for it. Once to get to the harder riding, ride tandem (one on each running board) and away you go. I am amazed where we can get people riding tandem.
