This goes for all motorized sports. Sledding needs this test big time. We lose trails or opportunities for trails to be built because of NOISE. #1 complaint.

Really? Maybe in some areas but speaking for this part of BC we are up narrow valleys far from civilization! Yes back country skiers will here a sled if they are skiing on the club tenure but there are more areas for them to go skiing that are non-motorized only so I suggest they go and find that quiet place and ski to their hearts content! :D

And BTW, I have kept the stock muffler on my last 2 sleds. Used to love the sound of a stinger on my old 800 but I guess I'm just getting old ha ha!!

What about that old railine that runs across BC in your neck of the woods. Do you think if we all were as quiet as we could be maybe more of that trail could be ridden? Kettle Valley Railway
Not just sleds but ATVs and bikes also

I would like to have seen that test done on a bike with an aftermarket pipe just to see how much louder it is.

Personally, I believe a spark arrestor is a must have, but as far as how loud it is I don't really care. Where I ride, nobody else does either. Only reason I would change it is for a weight reduction anyhow. I know years ago when I pulled the stock muffler off my Vinson, the louder Pro Circuit I put on was only a 1/4 the weight-maybe even less.

Also the aluminum body mufflers don't start fires Like stockers.

Where the mud and grass fall off cause there on fire-coals. With the stocker.

The aluminum body don't get even warm enough to burn grass.

But forest fires are ok now I guess

I was referring to your quote meaning all including snowmobiles, and very few sleds ride on the C&W or KVR. And to answer your question, no. The bicycle groups are dead set against all motorized use of the abandoned railbeds whether we have quiet or loud machines. The 2 main complaints are motorized users soften the surface making it hard to peddle a bike on (false as atv's have actually pushed aside the ballast on the railbeds and made 2 nice hardpacked trails), and 2 - dust. Yes we do create dust but 9/10 times I can see a biker far enough ahead that I slow down and make very little to no dust. Not once have I heard an excessive noise complaint on the railbeds. Unfortunately they are set in their ways and want exclusive use of the railgrades.

Getting way off topic here, so I won't ramble on any more! :D

It depends which after market pipe you go with. FMF Q is quieter than almost any stock pipe and is spark arrested as well. Lighter is great but it really does not make a difference to 95% of the riders out there...Take sledding for example, I have kept my giant suit case exhaust in my ski-doo sleds the last two years, notice zero difference, but it is way quieter, I still wear ear plugs since I sled and dirt bike and trials 4-5 days a week through the season and I want to hear when i am older!

By the way LBZ your gonna love that new sled, have 2800km on my xm now and it absolutely rips over 2012! Not sure what your coming from but your in for a real treat! Enjoy it...

I have the fmf Q on my yz and it doesn't sound much quieter than the stock silencer but is much lighter and has a spark arrestor. The fmf Q stealth on the other hand is super quiet but all the bikes I've seen them on seem to spooge quite a bit.

As far as my sled it is far too loud but I'm not going to buy another can for a machine that I am going to upgrade after one more season. When I pick up a 2014 I will be looking for the lightest quietest can around though.

truth about it is. no matter what you say or do. the greenies hate anything motorized. they cried about noise, dust, plant life damage and there newest fight is water quality!(silt in the creeks) they've tried every way they can to shut us down for years.

This may be true for sure, but way give them more ammo....loud pipes are not needed or necessary. Especially a stock 450 which rings out about 120DB, it annoys me and I love dirt biking!
