Hi everyone,
You may be aware that BC has passed several new pieces of legislation in
the past year. I am sending you a summary of these new laws so that you're
aware of them while you're traveling within BC on business. Please forward
this information along to any of your employees who may also be heading to
BC on business so that they're aware of it.
1. Cell Phones: Typing, Texting or Dialing
On January 1, 2010 the Province of British Columbia introduced legislation
which outlaws typing, texting or dialing on a handheld cell phone or any
handheld portable electronic device while driving. Offenders will be
subject to a $167 fine and a penalty of three driver penalty points against
their permanent driving record.
2. Driving more than 40 km over Posted Speed Limit
British Columbia has revised the fine and penalty process governing
excessive speeding of more than 40 kms over posted limit. Consequences
include:
- a fine of $368 - $483, depending on how excessive the speed
- three penalty points on the driver’s licence
- an ICBC driver-risk premium of $320 a year for three years, over and
above regular insurance premiums
- *Vehicle impounded for up to seven days. This can escalate to 30 or
60 days for repeat offenders.
3. Blood Alcohol Level of .05-.08
Drivers caught once with a blood alcohol level in the warning range —
between 0.05 and 0.08 — will face an immediate, three-day driving ban and a
$200 fine. Those caught twice in a five-year period face a seven-day ban
and a $300 fine; and those caught three times over five years face a 30-day
ban and a $400 fine.
