For my fellow Newfie's and all veterans out there, remember to take a moment today during your Canada Day celebrations to remember the sacrifice of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment during the battle of the Somme, Beaumont Hamel in 1916.
This tragedy nearly extinguished a young country at the time, the aftermath of which can still be felt in the province today.
For those that don't know the story:
"It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault only failed of success because dead men can advance no further."
- Major-General Sir Beauvoir de Lisle, Commander of the 29th British Division, reporting on the efforts of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment.
