A look back at iconic Jeep models
Chrysler Canada said Tuesday it's voluntarily recalling 180,000 of its older model Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty SUVs over fears that the fuel tanks may catch fire in a rear-end crash.
On its U.S. site, Chrysler said it was recalling nearly three million 1993-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-07 Jeep Liberty SUVs.
The company said it will inspect the SUVs and, if necessary, "provide an upgrade to the rear structure of the vehicle to better manage crash forces in low-speed impacts."
Earlier this month, Chrysler defied the U.S. government's request to recall the vehicles, arguing that they weren't defective.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which said those models have too many deaths from fires when the Jeeps are hit from behind, had given the automaker a deadline of Tuesday to change its mind.
