internet speed question

I'm on cable intent and I just bought a new router......I want to be able to down load movies/music quicker......so I got a 300 wireless with 1000 wired speed N router......my lap top has a 54G and now I have a 300N network card......so I should be able to do aprox 350 to my laptop but I can only get 150 or less........is my cable modem the bottle next now? it just seems so slow!

I just added a network hard drive to my router so I fill it and it streams to my PS3 or the 3D TV.....anyone know if mezzmo is a good program for this or not? I'm computer dumb but I got it working where the PS3 controls the network hard drive now.......filling it up with music videos and man is it come out nice....stream in HD instead of computer pushing it to the TV with a Normal crapy picture! LOVE IT, but hate the speed of down loading! help!

Gary, are you on Sunwave/Shaw internet services? Try there speed test meter with and without your router. Then you will be able to track down.

You Internet connection will always be your bottleneck when it comes to downloading stuff. You have to remember your internet connection is only as fast as it's slowest link. For example you have a 1GB wired LAN at home you can only download as fast as your provider offers you.

Also, most providers also limit upload speeds vs download speeds. For example I can download at arounf 15Mbs but only upload at below 1Mbs. This helps "disscourage" the average customer from setting up their own web server or any other service that would require faster upload speeds.

I have Servio running on a system at my place. Its free and streams all of my media from the computer to any DLNA device in my home. So far it works with my Samsung TV and Blu Ray player. It sees other DLNA devices on the network like Windows 7 computers and our Xbox but I haven't tried it with them as of yet.

You would be better off buying or building an HTPC in my opinion instead of trying to share a drive over a network. I tried doing this and the PS3 will not play certain file types in stock form, my 3D TV will also not play certain file formats either. I also tried getting DLNA certified everything but little did I know DLNA is garbage too. I have 2 HTPCs in our units and love them. Will never do anything else. I know alot of people use XMBC software but I just don't feel it's required.

In regards to streaming between those devices (for example a movie I downloaded upstairs but want to watch downstairs in the basement) I have a 100Mbps DL and 5Mbps Upload and can stream most 720/1080P files. I have issues sometimes with like 15GB+ 1080P .mkv files despite the media play used. I used to have 250Mbps shaw internet but found my devices could not read/write info (keep up with the download speeds) fast enough.
