Lookin at picking up a vmax 500 for my girlfriend I'm a doo guy my family had a Yamaha for a few years and it was an awesome sled anything I should be careful of?
The primary rollers and bushings. Snow injestion and piston scoring. Compression test. Smooth idle and responsive throttle. I had a lot of fun on my 95.
Watch the bushings in the telescoping shocks, steering can get a little sloppy if the bushings are worn out. I would plan on an upgrade for the suspension shocks, rears for sure, they were horrible in the rough stuff but handled pretty good overall on the flat, but the rear showed its weakness pretty quick with the stock shocks in there on the bumps. If you are planning on any kind of mountain riding, even the trail up to the cabin, track upgrade, and prepare to jet it properly for the elevation, they were a little harder on fuel than the other 500/600s of the time (not insane consumption but fuel mileage can be improved with a little re-jetting, elevation makes it worse so be ready to re-jet it before you head off to the hills). If you are riding it around the flats, you might not have to ever touch it or maybe just adjust it once.
Still a sexy sled by todays standards, even moreso if you tunnel it and get the rear end up a little.
