Does anyone have any experience with this? The bike will never be registered or insured so do I still have to do the RIV deal?

thanks

I brought one home with me from Rexburg last year and it was simple. They made me do the RIV but it wasn't a big deal. You just have to give the border crossing 72 hrs notice before you bring it across by faxing them 4(I think is how many I remember) pages, one is a cover showing what you are wanting, one is the title, one is the bill of sale, and the other I don't remember what it was. Just call the border crossing that you are planning to cross at and they can give you all the info you need.

"Competition Vehicles are designed for use exclusively in closed-course competition. These vehicles are exempt from the RIV program provided they: bear a label affixed by the manufacturer stating, in both official languages, that the vehicle is a competition vehicle and is for use exclusively in closed-course competition, or is accompanied by a signed declaration clearly indicating that the vehicle is a competition vehicle and is for use exclusively in closed-course competition. This signed declaration MUST come from a racing sanctioning body, i.e. FIA, AMA, CART, etc."

If it meets above criteria, then no. Otherwise you have to do the RIV thing, also if it has a motor, the Yanks have to know 72hrs before as mentioned above.

To clarify there are 2 parts to the process; exporting from the US at their crossing and then importing into Canada at our crossing.

The US side will require 2 documents faxed or emailed to the specific crossing you are using 72 hours in advance: 1) vehicle title (both front and back) signed over properly by the seller and 2) bill of sale signed dated etc properly by both parties.

The Canadian crossing is where RIV process comes into play and you pay the duties taxes etc at that crossing.

I just went through this for a car I bought from WA state this summer, it required full RIV process so I'm not familiar with something like a bike that won't be licenced or insured. RIV website is pretty good and they're quick to answer emails and relatively easy to get someone on the phone as well.

Good luck with it, if you understand the process and follow everything to a T you sail right through. If you demonstrate some lack of understanding you will get the gears at the border crossing :)

I have bought a motocross bike in the states. Yes you still have to do the 72 hour thing on the US side, no you dont have to go through the RIV program. Just pull up to the Canadian side, pay your tax, and youre done.

I had to do the riv thing when I imported my big red pig from the states. I shipped it up from Arizona to Spokane on an American carrier. I picked it up at the terminal and drove it across the border. I had to take it to Canadian tire for the inspection... They didn't even unload the damn thing or start it. Easy peasy
