They are made of Spring steel. you bolt them either to your skid or running boards or skiis, depending on the type that you buy. When riding on hardpack or frozen trails you put them down, they send up a spray of ice that lubes your sliders and cools the exchangers in the tunnel. Works way better than dragging your feet.

yup............ what Summiteer said!!!! put a 3/8" bolt in the inside back corner of each ski & away you go........... no worries about lack of lubrication or over-heating anymore. don't have to worry about reverse either. just remember to take them out at the end of the day.

Y'see now that's a freakin' good idea. Way better than the $70.00 a pair scratchers I've been bending up for the last four or so years.

Got ours drilled behind spindle on ski before it curves upward.... Works awesome giving alot of spray. Just use a couple of washers & double nut the bolts.

i know of one guy(my old Doo dealer in Golden) that had those rail-mounted scratchers on his 16" wide track.............. jumped up & caught his track & ripped it apart & threw him over the bars going down the trail!!!!!
& with all the bent & broken ones out there......... not my choice!!!!

You put the bolt with the head down or up? Don't the threads get dinged up and make it hard to remove the bolt? This sounds like a good idea, but it's the first I have heard of it and I'm not sure how to implement. Any chance you have a pic?

Thanks.

what i have actually is a piece of 3/8 cold roll with a washer welded on it about the middle. put it up thru the bottom of the ski then put another washer on top of the ski, then slide a cotter pin into a pre-drilled hole in the scratcher. i have never changed a set of sliders in 8 yrs riding out in Golden........ no matter what the trails look like.(for good measure, we had a carbide tip welded onto tip of scratcher............. from skilsaw blade)

Actually, What we using is 3/8" ready rod approx 3" lenght with fender washers & nuts, One on each side & make sure you get them good & tight so it don't work loose & egg shape your hole, Then ya can adjust lenght & remove them by removing top nut.

Finally a cheap but very effective scratcher. I like it. So much you can do with that design.

That is totally kick butt. What a great idea. Now I'm glad I did not buy $70 scratchers like I wanted too (forgot to add them to shopping cart at royal on last buy). Plus the weight on this is much lower. And you can use reverse. I like low cost red neck solutions like this. Thanks guys! I'm gunna go out to the garage in my PJ's now and cut me up some ready rod!!

just so i am clear, this scratches into the hard packed snow and kicks it up enough that it hits the track which flings it against the inside if the tunnel to hit the heat exchangers??

YUP, ITS TO KEEP THE HEAT EXCHANGERS COOLER AND 2ND THING IS TO KEEP THE SLIDERS ON YOUR SKID LUBRICATED AND WEAR LONGER....... HOPE THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION............. ;)

this is a great idea. I just bent mine on Saturday. They could be straightened but it'll just happen again. Lets keep this one going.

you have many options here.......... when i had mine in the back holes like my pics, they eally grab hard & makes it hard to steer going down the trail. i drillind new holes on the ski right inside the spindles (or like one other guy said, right behind the spindles) & it made it very controlable after that.
