A couple things work to the advantage. First of all, the stick has to be green so that it just doesn’t snap. Secondly, a birch tree is the strongest and doesn’t seem to splinter like the evergreens. Thirdly, speed or lack of speed is important.
I realize the inherent danger but so far so good. It is like a lot of things; good ideas come out of hokey things.
With that in mind, someone should put a replaceable 1/2” diameter sleeve on the present scratchers and that may work better than the present ones.
