Teachers keep day books and the process has followed me into retirement. I have quite a record of events and occurrences for years past.
When I first came to the Elk Valley, people would say "wow, we sure had a lot of rain!" or "it has been really wet this year" without knowing or having a clue how much rain actually fell. I have keep rain fall records at my house for years. Here is the information for the last seven years. All around the same time of July.

July 16, 2017 - 1 8/10's
July 18, 2016 - 8 6/10's
July 16, 2015 - 6 9/10's
July 21, 2014 - 1 8/10's
July 16, 2013 - 12 1/10
July 19, 2012 - 12 5/10's
July 13, 2011 - 4 4/10's
July 18, 2010 - 8 3/10's

The numbers speak for themselves. Some years are definitely wetter/dryer than others. As you can see, this year and 2014 were very dry in the upper Elk Valley at Elkford, BC (that is where the rain gauge is located). I have heard that in Central BC, they have closed the bush/back country. It isn't closed here yet but I can see it coming.

How much rain have you had in your area this year?

Not much significant rain since around seeding here. Had a big 3/10's in last 2 day event last week. Father in law had 4" at same time east of Strathmore. No more general rains it seems. Its luck of the draw with thunderstorms and sometimes you can get bit with the harder rain variety. Lol
