I have an 2005 Honda 400 Canadian trail 4x4

The back brakes are not working, If you step the brake peddle or the hand brake for the rear you have to push it back by hand because it get stuck. Water must be in the back drum. When its cold the back wheels are stuck till you heat up the back drum. Is this a hard fix? what needs to be done?

Also its an automatic so the gears grind when I go from drive or reverse only sometimes. The Idle speed seems to change sometimes. Should I turn the Idle down or is something else wrong? How do I turn the idle down?

Would love some help on this stuff, thanks everyone.

For starters go and get your self a service manual I hear they come in really handy :) I have looked many times for Honda SM's but they are hard to come by free online.

If I remember correctly for the rear drum, pull the tire and remove the rear axle nut and the drum should come off with a little rubber hammer coaxing.

sounds like you have water in the drum and/ or cables. get new cables and clean out the drum well and it will be good again, until you go in a lot of mud! the reason it grinds when you put it in gear is because of the high idle. if you look in the operators manual that comes with the quad, it will tell you where to adjust the idle. it is quite simple just cant remember what side of machine it is on. another tip for puttin git in gear is to move the leaver quickly into gear. even when the idel is set right, this is a good habbit, other wise if you VERY SLOWLY move the leaver uinto gear it will grind all the time. now im not saying just ram er' in gear lol.

also make sure your carb is clean and throttle cable is working correct.

For the idle adjustment, there should be a little black plastic turn screw on the left side of the carb..turn it in to idle up and out to idle down. The idle will need to be changed according to the engine temp. I had an 06 Trail edition, so I am assuming they are nearly the same. I would open the drain screw on the bottom of the carb for a few seconds to drain out any contaminants and see if there is any water in your gas. Also, I think that Arewethereyet is right about pulling the drum apart to check for water. The honda drums are bad for filling up with water. You should be able to adjust the slack adjuster on your brake cable once the drum and pads are clean and dry, so that the brakes will work again.

i had that problem too with my honda 680 but it was cause so much grass got in the brakes so i picked it out and blew it out with an air hose and once it was cause of too much ice and snow so i took it into a heated garage to melt out but now it works fine
