I think you should give it a second thought. "so i don't really know where to start " a lot of know how goes into these kits and "i don't really know" doesn't fit into the equation. save yourself a pile of money and buy a kit that has been proven

im just going to ramble thoughts off the top of my head for you to consider.

you need a fuel adding system like power jets to increase the fuel volume with change in elevation and boost increase/decraese. need to create some differant vent and vac lines. need a charge tube with an airbox that can be pressurized. need to block off the rave valves or use the latest fix. you need to run lower compression. depending on what your motor is at now. and how much boost and what type of fuel. you should be looking at running a 50% race fuel. also need a turbo oiling system. its alot of work but alot of people do it. also need some type of blow off valve for pressure releif. also need to weld a flange to the stock pipe to mount up to the turbo. will probly need new drivers as the stock ones will not hold up to the power. also need to come up with a good clutch setup to help with the turbo lag and put the new power to the ground. ventilation, monitoring, af guage, digatron are a must. you are going to want to replace the top end because if you have existing blow by well its going to get worse. the esxhaust system also needs to be reinforced as the stock pipe will most likely split under boost pressure and extra springs need to be added to both flanges to hold it to the motor. the computer system will need to be eliminated or bypassed and you should probly consider deleting the oil injection while you are at it. its alot of work to build one yourself and there will be alot of trial and error involed. just so you know there are turbo 700 doos out there working well under boost. the other consideration you will have to think about is what kind and size of turbo...aerocharger self contained unit but limited on boost? or an automotive oiled turbo. what angle to mount it at to get the proper oiling. how you are going to cool that oil and store it. where to mount the tank and how you will route the lines to the turbo for cooling. need to have the proper SIZE of turbo for your application. you can not just take a turbo from a firefly and slap it on your sled. you would be supprised how much volume a 2stoke motor at 8000rpm moves and you would have to have a little snail on there that is actually just a restriction. boost volume charts need to be looked at to determine which turbo will flow the right amount of air for your application. how will you get air to the turbo? and keep snow off it? what about when you roll over? how will you prevent oil from backing up through the turbo seals and into your intake plumbing. what reeds are you going to use? stock ones will most likely blow apart and take your engine with it. there are aftermarket turbo reeds available. exhaust exit location? tunnel or front dump? in deep snow if it gets plugged up its not fun. straight exit of baffled exit

theres more. thats just what comes to mind. i dont know of a specific kit for the zx but turbo performance can sell you all of the parts you will need and are very knowledgable on the subject.

to get a kit would be around 6000$ and most people think they can do it alot cheaper. but the fact is by the time it is said and done and running to your satisfaction you wont be far off that number but will have spent endless time making it work. small things like fittings and hoses and adapters add up FAST. im not saying dont do it. everyone has to start somewhere but you really have to be all in to make it work. and be the kind of person that knows its not going to cost less but you get the enjoyment of trying it yourself.

ps do you have another sled to ride while your doing this. it takes time and you dont want to be down while you make this baby work

p.s.s. nitrous is awesome. in the mountains.

he asked whats involed. thats some of what is involved. i dont know of a proven kit for a 700zx do you? it has been done and there are knowlegable turbo builders that will help you along the way and get you the right parts to make it work. and if there is no kit. they will make one.

Maxwell you just took the fun out of it LOL but so true. you also forgot the 1/2 dozzen or so topends because of meltdowns or even worse complete engines because of lack of knowlage LOL so now your sitting about $12000 and up and still dont have the turbo 700!!!

SORRY! I will shut up! if you get it running be sure to send pics. this is a little harder than trying to boost a lawn mower........hey try that first!

well, thank you so much for the big reply maxwell, i realize it would be a ton of work, but like i said i don't know much and your reply has made me say WOW and i think i will just stay away from the whole turbo thing!
I was just thinking it would be neat and something fun to try out but i think i will just leave my sled the way it is as i just did a top end and new pistons already!
thanks to everybody who replied with their input!
P.S nice sled maxwell, you say you have nitrous in it? hows that work?

I joined this forum in Dec and forgot to check back for a while. I'm glad I did, it's cool to see interesting topics like this.

I gotta say though there is nothing wrong with building a home made turbo kit, IF you know what you are doing. Getting it tuned properly after it's installed is half the struggle anyway, even with a pre-assembled kit of some sort; so you're going to be having someone else tune it properly either way if you can't do it yourself. The real downside to the kits is they usually only offer a turbine that is too large for what most people need, and the turbine itself represents a huge chunk of the overall price. I don't see the point in paying 2k+ for a Turbo that's capable of making 450bhp, when I'd likely never want more than 250bhp which a cheap T2/T3 could handle just fine. Just my 2 cents :d

Hell I've got a T28 with a bit of shaft play someone can have for free if they want to ever try this..

Hmmm. maybe for some people it shouldn't happen, but not all. How do you think all the turbo builders started?

no ones really saying not too you just reaaalllly have to be up for the challenge. and understanding it wont just bolt together.

but yah everyone has to try stuff or it will never happen

Oh, he was serious....??
I thought this thread was an elaborate joke lol. I've seen first hand what a properly running turbo can take to tune and build. If your not completely positive you can make it work, and have several grand your willing to pi$$ away, don't even think about it.....

Nitrous works great
