the owner of b.c.'s largest heli-ski operation is calling for a crackdown on snowmobiling in b.c. Mountains, following 19 deaths this year.

Drastic measures need to be taken to prevent further fatalities, says mike wiegele, a founding member of the canadian avalanche association.

"it's totally unacceptable that people are dying in large numbers. It's an epidemic," he said yesterday.

"snowmobilers are out of control. They go into closed areas without caring about anybody else," he said.

Wiegele said search-and-rescue operations were traumatized by one fatality last year in which the coroner was delayed recovering a body.

"we found [the victim's] face chewed off by wild animals," wiegele said. "it was very upsetting to staff."

he's calling for provincial snowmobiling guidelines, an "expert inspector" hired for all commercial operations using crown land, more monitoring stations with information on snow stability, and steps to hold all snowmobile groups responsible for back-country accidents.

Wiegele said there is a world of difference between heli-skiing, which his company has operated for decades, and snowmobilers heading blithely to uncharted, steep terrain.

"years of experience in the back country are needed to be safe. We have medical people on staff and belong to international mountaineering organizations," said wiegele.

Mike wiegele helicopter skiing operates in the blue river area between jasper and kamloops. There have been chopper crashes and deaths -- on average, one fatality every 10 years.

His company performed four unpaid rescues last winter, each costing up to $20,000.

Freelance journalist keith thirkell likens the situation to whitewater rafting in the 1980s, when there was a series of accidents and operators were unregulated.

"the government set down rafting guidelines and made it safe," thirkell said.

Wiegele said he has had little success raising snowmobile awareness during the current provincial election. He has talked to the liberals, but received luke-warm responses.

"tourism is the economic base of all of b.c. This is not good advertising," he said.

I met him years ago while out in some area we likely shouldn’t have been but it was a different time!, , he was out with just one other guy and their own chopper, we all sat and had lunch together and just talked snow and mountains for an hour! He must be really old now, he looked to be in his sixties then and that was well over 20 years ago now!

he's not a spring chicken that's for sure, this is what the google sent me to:

We had words with him at one of our blue river areas about 20 years ago. He told us to enjoy it today because we won’t be riding there anymore. We still ride that area now.
Another area that was sensitive was Westridge at valemount, back in the earlier days. Anyone who can relate to this area would have the same memories of the helicopters diving towards them with a low fly by pass over their sleds. I believe this approach was supposed to turn us around and head back to the trucks.
Everyone wants to ride untouched snow and keep certain areas a secret so they can ride to themselves. The difference with Heli skiing is running a business and making a lot of money, saying come ski our untouched mountains in British Columbia.

You guys carry a lot of hate for the skiers. lol Lifes way too short

Hate is a strong word, but I think it bears reflection on that demographic’s intentions and actions over the past years.

I do not recall a time when the skier/heli-skier/non-motorized back country group has been supportive or overtly cooperative about backcountry land use. In fact, they seem to step on our collective nutsack every chance they get to keep crown land for themselves for either moral or commercial purposes.

The actual act of sliding around on snow on a plank or two in itself is beautiful, it is the people and their intentions that tend to gravitate to that activity which is negative in many sledder’s eyes. JMO

Lots of skiers participate in motorized recreation. You are talking about the minority. I remember MW from my ski racing days when he was a coach for lake lousy. He was a grumpy little austrian.

Might be fair to note that the "poor millionaire" employs 250 people in blue river and now most of them are unemployed....
He employs 250 in the town of blue river during the season yes, majority of the employees however are not from blue river or even canada for that matter so boo hoo, looks good on the tard. Met him once years ago at a ski and snowboard show in calgary, hes an arrogant dickhead

From what I understand, Weigle does not employ any local residents. Nor does he support the town. Hence why there is so much animosity towards him. Although, it sure was a sight to behold when a bunch of his employees- all young girls - decided to go to the Legion one particular Thursday evening a few years ago. Whew!.... that was fun.
They go for karaoke night at the legion quite often, gets pretty fun lol

Our club has this issue every year, hut society won't help with trail maintenance, fee collection etc. But to access their cabins they need to use our volunteer maintained trail.
