After years of government secrecy on the Grizzly study, they announced the other day it will be officially listed as a threatened species. Report was done a fews years back and was to be made public but they hid all the details. Still not much being let out.
What is so funny about this is that they are considering extending the ban on Grizzly hunting. If you look at the mortality issues with Grizzlies, most have occured within 500 feet of a road. Not that I'm favour of a Grizzly hunt, but the numbers show that hunting takes very few Grizzlies. Road access into the bush from forestry, oil and gas are hugely responsible for many of the deaths. Vehicle impacts and poaching due to access.
Will be interesting to see how this proceeds as I highly doubt the gov will do anything to curtail forestry, oil and gas roads. Most of the roads are supposed to be reclaimed once not in use (it's part of the land use contracts), but the gov does not follow up or enforce this.
I believe most of this is our governments feeble attempt at appeasing the general public without actually implimenting anything out of the study report....which for the most part still remains out of public hands....go figure.
