i'm so angry at my tra 3 right now. i just finished going thru the whole thing, rollers, bushings, o-rings, and a good solid clean.
then the other day were riding and the three bolts that hold the governor cup in place break. 2 sheared and one stripped the threads. an easy out and some longer bolts later and it was back together.

while i had it apart i noticed that the bushings in 2 of the rollers were pounded out and 3 of the o-rings were missing. what causes these problems?

the bolts snapping off i assume is because i didn't torque the bolts enough and they wiggled loose and then sheared. but the rollers and o-rings?

any ideas? i debating just ditching this clutch and trying my luck on another one. heard of a few guys dong this. or is a good tra 3 the best for this setup?

I can't speak on the other options but the tra clutches are definitely known to be maintenance intensive and the parts aren't cheap!

the tra 7 [ 800r's ] are the worst for being labor..... but are real easy to work on [ which is a good thing takes no time at all ] ...

sounds like you have an underlying issue. the tra of any type should never have any issues until well over 3000 miles. springs/orings and cushionss hould be replaced at about 2500 miles.

i would say one of your bushings is gone on one of the sheaves or the spring cap. if not then yes its possible you didnt torque the bolts enough.

but since your spring cup bolts failes this is going to cause the rest of the clutch to fail as the bushing in the fixed sheave and the spring cup bushing is what holds the clutch peices true to eachother. as soon as a spring cup bolt breaks now its torqing the clutch unevenly. this will cause the orings to pop out and the rollers to wear out in a serious hurry.

at 8000rpm if a small peice isnt playing its part it doesnt take long to have a catastrphic failure.

best bet is to check the tolerances on all of your sheave bushings and spring cup. if they are within tolerance then rebuild the rest of the clutch. you may need to replace the ramps now aswell because if one is worn more than the other it will cause roller failure aswell.
