You need registration and insurance to ride on any crown land in Alberta. And yes the fish cops are out there at the more popular spots. If you don't have your stuff on you you will have to park machine and will be given a ticket.

Vehicle registration and minimum insurance of $200,000 for third party liability is required when operating on public land or highway (if permitted).

The only place you can ride without insurance and registration is on privately owned land. Most tracks require liability insurance and registration but all public land is is a legal requirement.I always get a kick out of it when i hear of people that complain about having to pay 200 bucks for insurance and 50 bucks for a plate . Would you rather pay that bill,or pay the fine? Or even worse,be on the hook for someone's medical bill because of an accident on the trail?

i think they actually haul your machine away and you have to pay impound and storage etc to get it back. seen them loading up a bunch of units last year inbetween ouitwest campground and ram falls. went and got new sticker for ours, unit was reg but sticker had came off. woman told us when we were ther lots of guys every year whining about getting fines, impound charges, etc for no reg and ins. if you are on public land you need the same as you need for your vehicle to drive it down the road.

I used to Tow and store for 30 yrs ,, would haul them away for the Cops, all the way to my farm,
$50 initial tow charge
plus mileage $1.00 a km
plus $5.00 a day.they usually seize the machines for 30 days?
figure it out.

Now that Im retired, theres a new guy with a very expensive NEW deck truck
$250.00 initial Tow
and $35.00 a day storage.
plus mileage ?

I would imagine the fines are the same for OHV's as a normal street legal ride. Personally I don't have a problem with it, but perhaps registration could be a one time thing same as trailers. Do they enforce noise pollution and spark arrestors as well?

they usually just tell you to load em up and go home if caught without plate, BUT they have seized the machines for 30 days on the spot too.
fine can be up to $500 for no plate.
BUT no Insurance is a $2500 fine.

Wrong... No insurance is $230, no registration is $115, for a dirt bike anyway. I know this because my buddy got burnt this weekend for no registration/insurance. I was stopped as well and got a $230 fine for riding on the side of the forestry trunk road in Nordegg. They let me go on the no headlight, taillight and spark arrestors.

Your buddy got off extremely easy. It can be up to $2500 for no insurance if the cop isn't feeling the luv.

Well i've never heard of anyone getting that hefty of a fine for no insurance, i know thats the penalty for not having insurance on a vehicle but even when I got busted for no insurance last year it was the same for my bike $230, fish cops have never told me it could have been $2500..they just said thats the fine, ohwell seems as though if they are grumpy enough they will fine you whatever they possibly can

Ladydirt, the same female fish cop probably pulled you over as us, we were just up the road at Chambers. We were all legal but 1 guy which bought his Grizzly a few days before but had his bill of sale to prove so she gave him the option to ride it back to camp or carry on riding but said the next time stopped might not be as cheap. We carried on with no trouble.:d

Hmmm strange, well like I said when I first got busted I asked what the fine was for no insurance before he issued me the ticket and he said $230.. he definitely did not mention $2500, so maybe the rules have changed a bit? Because my buddy's 2 years ago got no insurance tickets and they were the same, about $250 bucks.. so I dunno, i've definitely never heard of anyone getting a $2500 fine for no insurance on a dirt bike..yet.

Yeah Showtime there were 2 girls in the truck that pulled us over, first we saw them at the stop sign on Shunda Creek Road and once they saw us all hit the trail towards the trunk road i'm sure they turned around and met us there, we were prime targets..10 or so bikes/quads ripping out of the property. It was a brand new white Ford f-150... girls I find are even worse, they don't let you get away with crap..

It may be 230 for riding on crown land without insurance. 2500 for riding on a road with no insurance.

Well my buddy was riding on the trunk road, which apparently is a secondary highway, and his no insurance ticket was $230, no registration was $115 and my buddy's who got caught 2 years ago were riding right through the town of Nordegg and again, the no insurance was $230.... so i'm not arguing that the fine is $2500, but every time i've heard of someone getting a no insurance fine on a dirt bike, wether it was on a road or crown land, wasn't over $250 bucks, maybe every time they were just nice cops I guess?
