Hey guys
I just bought a used quad off of a friend and it came with no documentation as
to which model it is..
The shell on the atv says its a Sportsman 500 HO but that was a replacement and may not be the correct one not that the shell matters but Im doing some replacing of parts and there are a few types of 1998 Sportsman 500's
Any ideas are welcome lol
Thanks again guys

Post a picture of the front of the quad, the awd switch, the start button, the speedo and a rear axle. 98 Sportsman did not come as an HO.

97 Sportsman has small u-joints on the rear axles
98 Sportsman has larger u-joints on the rear axles
99 and up Sportsman has CV rear axles
2000 (maybe '99-1/2?) came in the HO version

The 98 and 99 500 HO engines only came in Scrambler.

It is a 1998 Sportsman 500. I belive only two models were sold in Canada; An EBS and a non-EBS. The only diifferenace between the two models were the clutches, belt and graphics. At one time Polaris sold a EBS converstion kit fr the non-ebs models for something like $500... it was cheaper than buying a single clutch and as a result it was a common upgrade to non-ebs units. If you are looking up parts online use the W98CH50A model for everything except clutch parts and the belt.

What tells you it is a 98 and not a 94 ? Just curious

94 were a Gen III units. The Gen IV Sportsman cames out in 96. Gen III was a different frame, steel racks, no IRS, and no 4 stroke engines to name the most obvious differences. Kinda like comparing a Piris to a Tundra.

96 and 97 used much smaller rear u-joints than the 98 models, but the larger u-joints were still a major problem so they used CVs on the rear axle in 99. In 2000 polaris went with braided brake lines and different speedo, AWD switch and start switch was incorporated into the run/stop switch. The termination board under the dash disappeared in either 99 or 2000 as well.

Oh ya, after you have put 25000 miles (not kms) on a single machine you get to know it very well.:d Anyone want to buy a 98 sportsman.... only used to check the fence... damn kids put more miles on it than I did:rolleyes:
