Looking at getting an enclosed trailer this year 14ft is my minimum length and width is my big question, I figured 8.5 was the standard but have conflicting info on being able to go as narrow as 7ft if you nose one and back one in? the 7ft are far cheaper, more common, and any less weight behind my stupid lifted truck is a plus. Any info on this will be great and pictures would be even better, thanks

i would never get a 7 wide. the 8.5 is so spacious and quick loading no friggn around. but alot of people like how they tow. altough i dont have an issue pulling my 8.5. also there was no way i was getting 4 174s and a 151 in a 7 wide easily without it being 48 feet long lol. and judgingby your truck it will just laugh at an 8.5x16

I'm just waiting on my 900 to sell before I decide how much to spend, our sled camp this year got way outta hand and I was a little overboard at the sled show so the budget may be a little tight, maybe go used though

7 wides definitely have disadvantages but also have their advantages too. They pull really easy because they are narrow and low to the ground. Being low also helps with loading and unloading. Unlike a 8.5 you do need to do some arranging to get the sleds fitted in, although you should easily fit 3 174" sleds in a 27 foot if you load from the front. The PDF shows 163" sleds loaded in a 27 x 7 and a 29 x 7. I did up this drawing for Ron who sells Legend Trailers and is a supporting vender ( ) It just depends on what features are important to you. If you have 2 sleds (163" tacks) and you don't want to back one in, you'll need 18' of straight wall.

I have a 28' royal and it was great at the time but wish now i would have went a little longer, taller ceiling, and heavier axles.
I agree with polaris, go as big as you can afford, or can handle.

just got a royal low boy and its 8.5 feet wide and and it 27 feet long. its nice cause the trailer low enough you dont need a beaver tail on your doors to flip out for loading and unloading. definetly look into the royal low boys.

Definitely go with the 8.5 wide. They tow like a dream, behind both lifted and non lifted. Plus theres little to no friggin around with loading them. Just make sure its v-nose and sled not car or dual purpose, that way you dont have wheel wells, just all flat floor space. Go with aluminum.
And dont be afraid of used, there are a lot of em out there for good deals, and plenty are hardly used.

17' interior length (12' straight, 5' vee) can fit 3-163" s, its tight but works (in 8.5w).
19-20' interior length fits 3-163" s with lots of space, its nice(8.5w)
24' (cant remember if its 24 or 22 interior) can fit 4-163"s & a 136", also tight, 4 sleds is nice with space (8.5w)

hope this heps

Mikew5j, I'm not sure I agree with your PDF. Most mountain sled will have a ski stance (I Believe) of about 44". The front of the ski will not fit under the tunnel easily so you will have to put one in backwards and one in frontwards to get them to fit. I think total width of the skis will be around 48" so that only leaves 36" to play with. We stagger our sleds in a 8.5' car hauler because of the wheel wells and we don't have much room left over. I could be wrong JS.

ya the new etec is 37 center to center so you would be 43" edge to edge. and the old doos were 39 so 45" edge to edge i would say. not sure what some of the other brands are at for widths?

Easiest way to know for sure is to get two sleds and put them together with your tape measure and Bobs your uncle you will know what floor space you will need.

My drawing is a bit simplified. If you angle the back end of the sled slightly towards the wall (like in the last picture of the 4 sleds in a 29 x 7) the running boards and ski loops will clear easy. The sled I drew up is a 163 Pro RMK since that's what I have and it was easy to get the dimensions I needed. The ski stance is 40". If you have sleds with a wide stance like an Assault, you wont get the spacing as tight.

I have a 28' Haulmark combo unit, so it has the fender wells on the inside of the walls and you can fit 5 units in it. 4 with 162 , 163 tracks and one with a 151. it is tight but can be done.

Yes, ours is a 28' as well. we have never hauled five but I sure it can be done quite easily.

thanks for the info, I'm hoping to go 8.5 for ease but atleast I know I can go 7 if need be, possibly go used this season and new 8.5 next year worst case scenario.

sold the king cat so I went with this 18x8.5, got if for a good price, it's insulated, wired professionally, has bunks, and is ready for my wood stove, should fit three long tracks quite easily, and sleep three people nicely when we don't go to our camp, only wish it had a ramp door but I have access to a tig welder so ramps should be easy to come up with, thanks for the input on the thread, after looking at a few the 8.5 seemed the obvious choice
