Okay, this is a start to the season! In Elkford, two of our avalanche areas have come down already; could be wind loading, could be the cold snap, or it could be a weak layer. I'm not going up to find out! Neither crossed the trail as there wasn't enough snow but enough to slide.

The large slide area in the picture will normally come down before Xmas but not this early. It was not serious and the debris pile was minor but just the same it came down. That tells me something that I will keep in mind for the next little while.

Be careful out there guys and gals.

PS I apologize for the crappy picture but the weather and not knowing a new camera are the culprits.

This is in the east Kootenays, 75 kms north of Fernie. In the particular area there was about 2' or 60 cm on the ground. Up high, where there may have been wind loading, I've no idea was the cause was.

Hope this helps....

Makes sense. Lots of snow happened in a short time, almost ripe for a natural cycle.
