Whats the deal with bikes being banned until April 30th at McLean Creek? Seems quite odd that quads can ride but bikes cannot?????

Are you sure its a bike ban or only that some trails are closed off until then? I went last year in April, early or mid month and there was no bike ban, but some of the bike trails may not have been operating. Anyway, biking at McLean this time of year probably isn't great anyway..I definitely would not go back in April again unless I had a good tour guide..it was way too sloppy :S

Lot's of places the bikes go the big fat tire flotation quads can't. The bikes tear into the hillside and give erosion a place to start. Blame it on idiots years ago not staying on established trails in the early spring.

Dirt bikes are out till May 1st. I was there on April 2nd and they shut us down. You need to have a minimum of three floatation tires until May. They also said that all bikes on the trails had to have a headlight and a tailight, has anyone ever had trouble with them enforcing this?

No, but I heard the same thing before we went out last year..but we decided to give it a whirl anyhow.. it was in broad daylight plus our bikes are not set up for headlights or taillights. We didnt' get any flack but there was no one there to say anything. I'll probably try again later this summer and see what happens.

Bikes are not allowed in Mclean till April 1st, not because of erosion, but because of snowmobile trails. Silly rule, yes, but a rule still to be followed. Local groups are working on getting this changed. Your support dollars would go towards this.

Secondly, ANY bike ridden on crown land requires the following:

1) Headlight
2) Tailight
3) Spark arresting exhaust
4) Valid registration
5) Valid insurance.

This is a rule everywhere in Alberta. It has been for a long, long time. Yes, they do ticket people and check often. Expect to be stopped if a F&W officer is around. They can be sneaky and often follow as they see you drive in. It's easiest just to be legal, and have fun. They are very good to deal with if you show them you are following the rules!

Handle bar bike lights pass inspection provided they work. Same with simple taillights as long as they are mounted to the bike. Many trail bikes already have forestry legal exhaust, but many do not. This is something that is your responsibility to put on. Your exhaust will be stamped forestry legal if it is, otherwise it is not. You can often see a screen or "turbine" within the exhaust.

Additional to this, license plates have to be mounted to the bike and easily readable while moving. Lots of people mount them in the spokes (no idea why), but this likely won't pass. They also don't accept on the back of a backpack. Best to have it on the number plate, or other easily seen location.

WTF? They can read the plate as it's going round and round and round in circles? Man are they getting picky...... :p

Exactly. Not an erosion thing. and not a silly rule IMO. No one wants a bunch of douchenozzles out on their dirtbikes ruining the sled trails, lots of families ride sleds there in the winter, not to say that quads don't rut it up just as bad at times though.

Not saying anyone here is a doucheweasel, but there surely would be someone who would trash the trail if the rule wasn't in place. Only takes one loser.

You're such a goof!!!:p:p:p Most of the peeps I have met here are really good folk and would not do it, but I have seen some total azzhats at this place on any given weekend and especially after the last couple of years at Maclean and associated surrounding campgrounds...say around the May long weekend :rolleyes:.....with the recent damage done, I would not put it past some mindless dolt to think that his dirtbike was a suitable substitute for a sled and spend his saturday tearing up a couple kms of perfectly good trail to satisfy his appetite for destruction and ruining it for someone else.

very true, gotta give you the gears. always seems to be a few who think it is there god given rite to destroy things. long weekends usually bring out the Molson muscle, which adds another looney element.

You know you can call me anything, just don't call me late for dinner.:d
