Direction of coolant flow...

I bought a slightly used '16 T3 163 last winter, and noticed that the paint is peeling from the right side of the cooler. I noticed a chip in the paint when I bought it, but then one day I open trailered it in April to a Buddys place and the paint peeled on one side of the cooler..

I went to Martin's west and inquired, the girl at the front service desk went to the shop foreman to ask about it....

He said it was from "abuse and overheating" right off the bat... without even looking at it,,,,,

Now, with that answer, I was a bit skeptical, because how could hot water make an enamel paint peel like that?

Even before the possibility of: bad surface preparation... bad paint... etc, he just concluded this. Black eye for
MMS...

I went to riverside and the service rep actually said that it could be possible, but if I give him the serial number, and some pics, he could open up a file case to see what they can do.

if they consider it, they would have me bring the sled in and check if it was ever overheated..

My question: Which way does the coolant flow< Down the right side then back via the left?

the paint pealed off the cooler on my 14 and it was never over heated. lots have had this problem.

The answer to your question is via an infared heat gun temp in vs temp out keep in mind thermostat location. Honestly the 20$ princess auto guns are sufficient for most people’s needs.

yes, throttle side is the “inlet”(hot side) if you will and brake side is the “outlet”(cold side)

that being said, a ton have this problem. Mine included.

You think that the coolant could get hot enough to lift powder coating? Doubt the motor would run after that heat soak. more likely bad paint or, bonding, or prep from the factory.

Seriously? Have to trouble shoot these things every day. It comes back to basic mechanics. Temp in vs temp out.

Ya that’s how I do it often also. I have a sweet snap on infrared camera temp gun. Very helpful in troubleshooting heat/cooling issues.

I thought they were painted not powder?

But yes I've seen it on lots of XM's it starts to lift in the grooves and peels off. Can't see it being from overheat likely from poor prep/adhesion.

Heat is not the problem, it’s brps pour as prep work before paint or powder coating. I’ve seen a lot of tunnels and coolers do that from them.

I might just get a colour match from Carlson and fix it myself..

Pretty much every one I've seen peels after a few years, mine included and it's never been overheated.

If I were fixing it, I'd look at getting a strip of black vinyl. Will give you some abrasion protection too.
