I have a Yamaha Apex XTX it has a 144x1" track. Can I have any fun in Valemont with this? I'd hate to drag it all the way out there and sit in the parking lots! Thx in advance!

Right now you could go anywhere with that. After adump of fresh snow you would have to poach the odd track but could still have a lot of fun!

Don't apologize. Your sled would do fine if you had more paddle under it then a 1". Do a Search for used tracks in the 2"-2.25" range. Otherwise most your fun will be digging.

IN the deep you might be digging but there are lots of areas you can go. Sleds are fun pretty much all the time wherever you are so if you are out with some friends in the mountains how can you go wrong?

If all your riding buddies are on mountain sleds I would recommend renting one. They will get tired of digging that tank out over and over, if you're up there on a fresh deep day.

Just rent. It will save you alot of grief. Between the weight, lack of horsepower, short track length/ lug height and improper mountain clutching of that sled you'd be just asking to get stuck as soon as the snow got deeper than 3" and the slope steeper than 15 degrees. JMO

You could buy a better track for the price of renting for a couple of days. If the machine doesn't work out, lots of 144's out there, easy sell as a used machine.

Edit - Oh geeze...typed too fast..meant used track!!! Not sell the machine

A used track and maybe clutching is cheaper when you have a sled that's almost capable. It's not like its a 131 1"

Fair enough. But he said he is a 'noob' so I'm guessing putting on a new track and clutching a sled that he most likely just bought for his first trip out west is likely not a project he would like to undertake.

Probably really just depends on what the people you are going with are riding and where you want to go. I'm just a big proponent of riding what is most suitable for the location and conditions.

True. Just not sure if he's a noob to sledding mountains or snow and mud

lol... noob to mountain sledding. It'll be the first trip to the big rocks snowmobiling. The current setup works great for where I am, and honestly, I don't wanna spend much (if any) for a one time trip. If I enjoy it, I am planning on purchasing a more capable machine next year.

Go for it! Keep yourself to the gentler terrain and in the tracks, you will be just fine. But if you try to push that thing a bit to do the same thing as some guy/gal on a modern mountain sled, prepare to be frustrated a bit! LOL. Some of us have had '70s era iron up there with conveyor belt tracks and had a blast, it has a lot to do with where you put your expectations. :d

Go have fun. Been riding for over 15 years and we didn't always have 2.5" 163's! It's a given that you won't go where a new mountain sled will but you can still have some fun on what you have and then decide if you want to do some upgrading. Biggest thing i have to say is make sure you pack all of your avy gear and would highly recommend taking an avy course with Zacs Tracs, best money you can spend keeping yourself and your friends safe.

Get out there and enjoy!

all of us going are mountain noobs so... I'll also be with a Crossfire and another Cat 4-stroker with smaller track.
Go have fun. We were in Valemont for new years and there was lot's of short track sled's up there. In our group there was a 144 and the person had a great time. JUST GO RIDE. You will always have fun with the right people and the right outlook!!!!!

If your group has about the same sleds you'll have fun the cross overs have 141x1.5 and the older ones were 136x1.25 and they all have fun.so just go have fun

Like previously mentioned, right now you would be fine with the snow conditions and go anywhere.
Prepare to dig and get frustrated though if they get a couple feet of fresh.
Personally I'd rent as well if you don't want to throw a bigger paddle on and the snow ends up being deep. You will enjoy yourself alot more and likely be less bagged at the end of the day than if you spent the day shovelling and lifting.
Either way it will be better than a day at work lol!
