Careful what you say when it's that cold.
“A temperature inversion caused sound waves to bend back toward the ground rather than escaping upwards,” said David Phillips, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist. “People at the airport could clearly hear dogs barking in town and townspeople talking as if they were close by instead of five kilometres away.”
Toole confirmed that Snag residents could eavesdrop on a conversation more than six kilometres away when the temperature dropped. Ice in the White River also “cracked and boomed loudly, like gunfire,” that day.

As we joke about, hopefully those who oppose pipelines are turning down their thermostats... and those who oppose pipelines pay attention to the news connect the dots on the 100+ car derailment and death of three rail workers at Field IF this had been an oil train!!

I live in Leduc so lots of planes that fly over. On a normal day summer or winter I don’t hear the planes in my house. During this cold snap you would swear the plane is about t crash into my house! You hear the wind on there wings and stuff more then the engines.

Not sure if that's true. In the late sixties we lived in a subdivision in Whitehorse called Porter Creek. The temperature never got above -50°F for 2 weeks and in that cold snap we woke up to -73°F one morning without any wind. That was a long time ago and maybe our thermometer wasn't accurate?? My dad, brother and I spent a day banking snow around the place because we had frost on the inside of the walls and the furnace wouldn't shut off, then we spent another day in the spring shoveling it all away :)

LOL, I remember banking snow up against the house when I was a kid. Only sleds we had back then were the kind you sat on to slide down a hill.:d We never saw any temps close to -63C which is -81F.

It's winter it gets cold in the winter. As a kid in Prince George you could count on a week or two of -40 every early January.

I grew up in P.G. also! Dont miss the cold or the rest either

This part of the article made me laugh.

“The 16 men at weather station had other problems on their minds though. The nearest women were 465 kilometres away — in Whitehorse, Toole said.”

GP in the early 90’s it stayed for most of January.
28 days and only a couple did it get up to -38.
Job site was below 50 a couple mornings . Once below 40 it’s whatever it seems.
Was gross but after a few days it just seemed normal and everything carried on.
Equipment and things would still work back then but now all this new crap ? Not a chance from what I have seen.

The mercury dipped to a frigid -46C at the Edmonton airport, making it the coldest place in Canada, he said.
With the wind chill, it felt more like -59C.
