I have had my sportsman 500 since 07 and haven't been satisfied with the take off power since it was new. I have been thinking about adding a clutch kit since it's time to replace my drive belt anyways. I have rebilt fourwheelers before but never had an automatic. Any suggestions on whether to tackle the job my self or have a shop do the job.....

here is the thing.

all the clutch kit will do is hold you in a low gear longer .. its made for big tires so the bike can turn them in mud.

a stall spring kit can give some rpms back to the low end but imho its hardly noticeable.

in low i notice the differnce on my bike but i could always turn tires in low anyways.

id say if your buying for performance then maybe your looking at the wrong things.

my sister has a 2002 400 sportsman and it has this boggish slow start before the power comes on as well. in that kind of setup im not sure its a clutching issue more so a engine issue.

personally a cam is about the same $ as a clutch kit actually its cheaper usually if your buying say a HL clutch kit anyways with stall springs.

and it will open that bike up on the bottom end alot more.

id probably go with a cam , new ngk plug and tune the carb "jet, needle , mixture screw"

and im betting the bike would wake up on the bottom end.

I bought an AAEN clutch kit for the two Polaris 450 that I have. The kit costs just below a hundred directly from AAEN. To install you back off the clutch bolt then remove the tower screws on your main clutch. You then remove the main bolt. Reason you keep the main bolt in is so that you don't get hit by the cover as you release the spring tension with the tower screws. You take out each weight and install the new weights. Put on the new spring. Put the tower screws in, then the main bolt. Make sure you use a torque wrench for final tightening of the screws and main bolt. To do the install takes about half hour as you have to remove your cover and floor board. The kit I went with raised the RPM for first engagement of the clutch. Vertually eliminated the bog in the bottom end. Top end speed don't seem to have suffered. Does make the machine very responsive. Oh ya when you call AAEN, they will talk to you about what you want your machine to do and make the kit to do that. Here is the link to their page.:)
