define "burnt up" did the chain spontaneously combust? is it dull, or did the link snap
quantify your problems with facts please.
identify,record, and then troubleshoot.

Ive used damn near everything as bar oil but , well......... summer bar oil for summer and winter blend for winter.....har har , actually 15w40 works decent in the summer and ive even used tranny fluid in the winter (-25+) in a pinch. No need to run your chain tight, or it will run hot as heck with proper oil anyways and will burn up. Im sure that using anything but "brand specific" bar oil is

Bar oil isn't that expensive........
Cheaper than buying new bar/chain/sprocket

Did you cook the paint off the bar?

I always use the chevron ch!t. Nice candy apple red so it's easy to see if you're not getting enough. Seems to do a good job unless I let the chain get really dull then some heat can build. A jug lasts me about a year.

If you have ever used good bar oil you will quickly realize that it is very sticky hence your problem, the oil you are using just flings off the chain and does absolutely nothing. It is much cheaper than bars and chains.

During the summer months we recommend the "heavy" viscosity bar oil for chain saws. We sell Stihl, and based upon general feedback, all their oils and lubes are great stuff. The Stihl stuff is Red too, and a big jug of it is around 12.00

Have a great day!

well we have used motor oil mostly. bar oil when it is thought of, and yes bar oil is way cheaper than a chain. also way stickier than motor oil.

yes sure are. wasn't the fault of the oil, just regular maintenance. may as well start using the right stuff. just had to replace the chain this time. sure got hot in a hurry was literally smokin. must have been running it like that for a while. with the new chain it cuts, like new. hehe

I always file my rakers 3-4 strokes off a new chain, then u can saw with one hand as it will pull its way through the wood like a hot knife through butter. Oh and dont forget to flip your bar with your new chain ;)

I loaned my chain saw to a buddy of mine last year.... said he was just trimming some branches around the yard. Got the saw back.... the bar was a hue of blues, greens and purples. The chain was black and completely burned up. I asked him what the heck he did to it? He was cutting railway ties, never even knew it used bar oil??????? This is why i hate loaning my tools. Cost about 70.00 to replace the burned up chit!
