Still lots of people coating stock pipes. The loss of weight and added performance when removing clam shells and coating the pipe is normally not worth the cost.

The pipe works best when hot. If you can keep the heat in the pipe the better it works. Many people coat the pipes and put the clam shells back on, or wrap them in header tape. The pipe will be slightly louder with out the clam shells. I would still wrap a length of header tape around the pipe with a header tie to keep the harmonics down. The pipes can vibrate more with out the shells dampening the vibration.

Better off investing the money you would spend on coating the pipe into an aftermarket pipe if you want to spend the coin.

Hey Mike:

If you plan to keep your stock pipe, you DEFINITELY want to get the pipe Ceramic Coated and get the clam shells off. For that matter I recommend getting any pipe Ceramic Coated. It’s the only way to protect your investment and you’ll see lower underhood temps, reduced corrosion and even a little bump in performance. We’ve been Ceramic Coating pipes for close to 15 years and the BIGGEST source of pipe failure is corrosion as a result of the clam shell / insulators. The matting behind them gets wet and seeming stays that way till you sell the sled, corroding the whole time, lol. The corrosion is worse for guys that are exposed to salt spray and or use an open trailer.

In the late 90’s I’d say Arctic Cat was the leader for rusty pipes but over the last 7-8 years I’d say Ski-Doo is the clear winner. I’d guess crappy steel in the pipes aren’t helping matter in that I’ve seen 1-2 year old sleds damm near have holes thru the pipes as a result of corrosion.

We rarely ever see guys put the clam shells back on and even fewer wrap them. In most applications the Ceramic Coated pipe performs as good or better than the stock wrapped pipe. If you do plan on re wrapping the pipe I don’t recommend coating it with the Bright Ceramic Coating. Doing so will overheat the Ceramic and cause the pipe to dull out. If the pipe really gets hot it will open the pores of the coated surface and accelerate rusting. In extreme cases or overheating the Ceramic Coating will become sacrificial and it will start to shed off the pipe. In cases where the pipe will be re-wrapped I recommend using a High Temp Ceramic that is rated for 2000F+. These are the type of Ceramics we use on high temp Turbo applications.

Hope this helps

Keep in mind that you can NOT wrap or put the clam shells back on a "Bright Ceramic" pipe.

Because the coating will exceed its skin temp limit. At which point, the bright shiny pipe will look dingy grey, and then it will begin to rust and flake off..... Much like these below.

If you plan to wrap them or re-install the shells for some reason, you need to use a High Temp Ceramic Coating that is good for 2000F+

Its pretty simple. If its not a Bright Ceramic you wont have a problem. If it's Bright, you're going to have an issue. Don't take my word for it, I only have 15 years experience Ceramic Coating pipes......
