i know a few people that are having this problem already. they have to file a tax return with 0 in revenue. if they don't, and they haven't for many years, they can be fined for not filing. they said the canadian gov't has a deal with the yanks to collect any income taxes owed to them from people here. but this new deal is fines and penalties for not filing, not actual taxes owed, and thus the canadian gov't WILL NOT collect for the USA. now if they travel back to the states, and use their US passport, eventually they might be able to be detained. basically it's one big cluster fawk right now

What about the hockey players that have dual citizenship and frequently travel back and forth? I'm thinking it is about the money grab and not a lot of thought put into the process! Friggin' politicians.....

I have a niece with dual citizenship (born in the states) and 2 passports (CND and USA), and living/working in Canada. Is she a little nervous? Yes!

it's really not a big deal, just have to file an american income tax, with 0 dollars earned, thus no tax. the problem is they are talking about making it retroactive, and so all these people that have not filed in the states for many years are gonna get hit with huge fines for not filing, that will of course have interest added. that can add up to very large bills!!!!!

2 things though. 1) bankruptcy doesn't include taxes, 2) canadian gov't has only agreed to collect taxes owing, not the penalties for not filing
